P.E. Resources for Distance Learning

Donation protected
My name is Leah Rodriguez, and I am beginning my 20th year as a middle school PE teacher in the San Lorenzo Unified School District. We will be distance learning starting in the fall and likely for the entirety of the year. Distance learning has brought many new challenges and teaching in a low-income district creates additional hurdles. I want to be able to equip my students for success but we don't have many resources available to us.  Physical Education is such an integral part of adolescence for both physical and mental health, and one that often gets overlooked in discussions about distance learning.

This coming year, I will have approximately 210 students in my classes. One of our mission statements for our department is to help students find at least one physical activity or sport that they love and will continue to pursue into adulthood. With the challenges of distance learning, and no equipment readily available for our students, finding a way to best achieve this goal with my students has been difficult.

Students will be in front of a screen the majority of the day during Distance Learning, so I want to get them off their screen and get them active. That's when my teammate had an idea -  and how you can help! We have seen many elementary school teachers create "toolkits" for their students. They include essential learning materials for them to use at home, and we thought "why can't we do something similar for PE?" So, we have put together a "distance learning PE toolkit" with dynamic, and cost efficient materials that will allow for my students to practice a multitude of skills from home (including fitness, coordination, and skill specific techniques). I have gotten the cost down to about $6/student, however, when you multiply that by 210 students, it is more than my teacher salary can cover. Below is what each student will receive-- if we exceed my goal to provide these basic items, I may be able to supply more advanced items as well! (I am also looking into getting larger items donated by larger organizations)

Basic Distance Learning P.E. TOOLKIT:

3 Footbags (hacky sacks)

1 Frisbee

1 Jump Rope

1 Drawstring bag

These items will also be useful in the event that we return to a "hybrid" model, because it will ensure that students do not need to share equipment- limiting contact and germ spreading. Without this equipment, many of our PE units will have to be converted to online "book work". My goal is to get students active, moving,  and working on their coordination and fitness - not sitting in front of a screen.  My students and I would be incredibly grateful for any amount that gets me closer to my goal! A $30 donation provides for 5 students!

I appreciate all of you taking the time to read and support me. Thank You!
