What We Do

In the Formula SAE Collegiate Design Series, we design and build a scaled

down formula style car from the ground up annually. Our vehicle then

competes against teams from across the globe in a number of design

competitions and performance races. The underlying goal of UCF’s

Formula SAE team is to learn all aspects of engineering through this

rigorous annual process in order to prepare us for our future careers in the

engineering industry. Formula SAE is an essential platform for learning

many different disciplines of engineering including mechanical,

aerospace, electrical, computer, and industrial engineering. The students

that are a part of our team are integral in developing new and innovative

engineering ideals through our car and are commonly found to be

industry ready in both knowledge and professional development by the

time they graduate when compared to non-FSAE students.

About the Competition

Every year we attend FSAE Michigan, the largest FSAE event in North

America, where we are scored in different static and dynamic events listed

below. The competition also serves as an opportunity to network with

fellow FSAE teams from other campuses alongside industry sponsors for

advice and potential career opportunities.

Static Events

• Design - One of the biggest parts of these competitions is design

presentation. We are critiqued on all of our engineering processes,

simulations, calculations, understanding, and design validation.

• Technical Inspection – The car is rigorously inspected to ensure it

meets the criteria set forth by the 130-page rule book.

• Cost – This evaluation examines the manufacturing of every part of the

car (including labor) to determine the overall cost of the car.

• Business - Students present a business case for the mass production,

marketing, and sale of their vehicle.

Dynamic Events

• Acceleration – This is a timed 75-meter straight run from a standing

start.

• Skid Pad – Here, vehicle performance is measured in a constant-radius

figure 8 track.

• Autocross – This is a tight course evaluating acceleration, braking, and

cornering capabilities.

• Endurance – The ultimate test is a 22-kilometer race testing handling,

durability, and fuel efficiency.

As you can imagine, maintaining a shop space and building a vehicle from

the ground up alongside a newly developing electric powertrain requires a

significant amount of funding. Formula SAE serves as a exceptional

practical application of engineering and project management skills, giving

our members the extra edge over the competition when it comes time to

step into their career. Without our sponsors, providing this learning

environment and meeting our goals as a club would not be possible.
