Greetings,
The Pamlico County Symphonic Band is seeking support as they prepare to represent Pamlico County at the Washington D.C. World Strides Festival of Gold coming up at the end of April. This national festival is a unique opportunity that our band was invited to be a part of because of its recent achievements at regional competitions and festivals. A Superior Rating is the highest rating that a band can earn, and the Festival of Gold only invites bands that have earned a Superior Rating in the prior school year.
The Pamlico Schools Band Program has had a rich history that brought the band a multitude of awards and accolades over many decades. Then unfortunately, for a lot of reasons, the band ended up going through some very difficult times. It has taken some time to regain that former pride and dedication the band enjoyed in years past, but in the last few years the Pamlico bands have again started to grow and are up to 85 students between the middle school and high school.
Last April our Pamlico County Symphonic Band earned its first Superior Rating (Gold Rating at this Festival) in over 20 years at the World Strides Music Festival in Williamsburg, VA.

Earlier in this school year the Hurricane’s Pride Marching Band, of over 30 students, had the most successful marching season in many years by earning 11 different awards and trophies, which included a 1st Place Overall and a Superior Rating. Here are the trophies and award from one of those competitions, The West Craven Classic.

The Pamlico Band Program is designed to teach and develop musical skill and knowledge, but is also highly driven to help develop students into respected citizens and leaders of tomorrow. The band program teaches our students discipline, a good work ethic, team building skills, musicality, athleticism, camaraderie, sportsmanship, respect, pride and much more that I don’t have space to list. Students in The Pamlico County Schools Band Program continue to be successful because they have bought into the idea that their best is not just desired, but expected. These students truly show that they are not just satisfied with what they have done, but instead continue to move forward and strive to be better than the day before. The upcoming festival in Washington, D.C. is a fantastic opportunity to move forward and start to create a legacy and culture of continued excellence in our band students.
You can be a part of that legacy and culture by supporting the band as we represent Pamlico County in our nation’s capital. Our students have gone on many trips before, but none of them have been like this one. The Washington, D.C. Festival of Gold will span 5 of the most rewarding and exciting days that our band has had a chance to experience.
From April 22 through April 26, 2016 the students will get to perform for, take a clinic from, and be judged by nationally respected music educators. Some of our highest achieving students will get to perform with a special honor band put together by auditioning students from all of the Superior Rated bands attending the festival. Our students will be able to see our country’s capital up close and personal as they tour the city’s greatest monuments, museums, and sights during the hours we have away from the festival. Of course to do any of this we have to raise money to be able to go.
It costs quite a bit to cover the travel, lodging, food, festival registration, and educational experiences for all 28 students, 2 directors, and 8 chaperones for five days. We recently found out that we will be required to take a charter bus instead of a school owned activity bus so the total cost will be about $27,724. That means it costs $730 per traveler.
The families of the students going on the trip are very supportive, but the vast majority of those families cannot pay for this trip out of pocket. They are trying but are having a very hard time getting enough funds from our traditional fundraisers. That is not to mention that some families have 2 students in band at the same time, or the adults that are volunteering their time to chaperone also need to have money to go. That is also not to mention the money families have already spent buying the instruments, music, valve oil, slide grease, reeds, drum sticks, mouthpieces, and strings, or the money that goes into repairs and private lessons.
My hope is that you can see the benefit in supporting these students as they represent Pamlico at the Washington D.C. World Strides Festival of Gold, but we want to recognize those that donate to us as well. In the following pages you can see the reward levels for supporting the students on this trip, and how to go about providing that support. Please read through the levels and consider donating at those levels, but know that any amount given will go fully to supporting a very worthwhile activity with many benefits for the young men and women involved.
