Most of you have met him already but for those of you who haven't yet, this is Cody - an energetic, sweet, beach loving, 5 year old, super mutt.

Tuesday morning, he wandered through a side gate that was unintentionally left unlatched from the previous night. He took this opportunity to mosey on down the street toward Golden Gate Park when he was ran over by a car driving 24mph on Fulton between 3rd & 4th. The drivers didn't realized they hit a dog until someone on the street reacted and helped them pull Cody from beneath the engine. It happened so quickly, they didn't have a chance to stop until he was already hit...
Thankfully, the extremely shaken & remoresful drivers rushed him to the nearest emergency pet hospital where his chip was scanned and we were notified of the incident. They mentioned Cody had been in a serious car accident with severe injuries throughout his body.
The injuries included:
-6 inch laceration on the right side of his chest down to his ribs
-Road rash across his body including his face, legs, back, and tongue
-A broken canine tooth that still needs to be treated by a vet dentist
-4 inch laceration above his back thigh
-3 inch laceration on his inner thigh
-3.5 inch laceration on his wrist
-Head injuries from the impact and subseqent road rash, which caused his head to swell

We arrived to the hospital as soon as we could. Shortly after arriving, the couple that hit him was there waiting for us and apologized profusely. They felt absolutely terrible. We all cried together when we went in to see him.
Cody, awake but in shock, was alert but responded well when he saw us. He was wagging his tail on the table and was the perfect patient. All of the nurses quickly fell in love with him, and were telling us how great he'd been while they shaved around his wounds and cleaned him up.
After the initial shock of seeing him in this state, we pulled ourselves together, wiped up some tears (actually a lot of tears) and spoke to the doctor about the diagnosis. The doctors gave us a quote of what Cody needed in order to even be diagnosised, and before they could treat him, we had to approve of his treatment and the cost. A low end of $5,400 to a high end of $11,000. He needed an ultrasound, X-rays, antibiotics, pain meds, bandages, surgery, had to stay over night for observation and pain management - the list goes on. He needed a lot of immediate medical attention and they couldn't promise he would make it.
Miraculously, the X-rays showed he had no broken bones, the ultrasound showed he was pretty clear of any internal fluid, but that his internal organs were really banged up. Thankfully his cognitive condition showed he was stable. Things were looking up!
After they flushed his wounds and gave him 30-40 stitches, he stayed the night for observation. They did a few more tests and were able to release him to us at 7pm on Wednesday (with drainage tubes sewn into his wounds and all). =)

We feel astonishingly lucky that he's still here! Cody needs some time to recover and a lot of close love and attention for the next few weeks, but we're hoping for a speedy recovery.
Thank you to our friends and family for your support, positive thoughts and vibes, prayers, and well wishes through this ruff time (pun intended).
Many of you asked if there was anything you could do to help, so we created this gofundme. Our goal is to raise $6K to cover the unexpected cost of his emergency treatments and the overnight stay at the hospital. His expenses are still adding up with post op procedures and follow up appointments including dental repairs.
We really appreciate any bit of help, any size donation counts - even sharing Cody's story with your network would be awesome!
Love and Gratitude,
Andrew & Amanda & Cody!!
