For those of you who do not know me, my name is Michael Diaz, and I am a sophomore at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. It is with a very heavy heart that I must inform everyone that my mother has passed away, and that my family is in serious need of assistance.
My mother, Ana Diaz, whom many of you are acquainted with, has been very ill for most of my life. Despite her natural disposition to be joyful, loving, and highly energetic, she has suffered from a myriad of health issues. When she was alive, she battled leukemia, post-chemotherapy complications, and the adverse effects of brain tumors. It is possible that many of our friends and family were not aware of her plight. Unfortunately, her poor health has finally resulted in her in early death. As my family grieves, we are being proactive in arranging her funeral and paying off her medical expenses.
On March 10th, a car quickly pulled out in front of my mother while she was driving, causing her to brake violently. While she managed to avoided contact with the car, she hit her head on the steering wheel and felt herself losing consciousness and functionality. Considering she recently had brain surgery, this was highly concerning. She stopped driving, alerted her family members, and was checked into HCMC.
Following the incident, she underwent emergency brain surgery to remove excess fluid from her brain and alleviate abnormal swelling. Although the situation was frightening and stressful, my family and her medical practitioners truly believed she would recover. Over the next couple of weeks, she made steady progress. My mother gained the ability to shake her head, move her arms and legs, and blow kisses, but she was still unable to breathe without the help of a respirator. Conscious and stable, but still struggling, she was transferred to Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul for long-term neurological rehabilitation.
On April 3rd, my father was told by the Bethesda hospital staff that it would be best for him to return to work because he would need to take time off once my mother returned home. After staying by her side every day since the accident, my father returned to work. He was sent off with a goodbye kiss from my mother (who was still unable to talk, now breathing through a tracheotomy tube), and told that the physical therapist would try to help her walk for the first time since the accident. While he was gone, however, my mother was given morphine to “reduce agitation” and left alone for half an hour by the hospital staff. Upon their return, the hospital staff noticed she did not have a pulse.
She was rushed to St. Joseph’s hospital to be revived and stabilized, but no brain activity was detected after her negative reaction to morphine. She was allowed to pass away peacefully at 10:54 PM on Wednesday, April 6th.
Due to my mother’s long history of illness, my parents have very little savings, and my father is struggling with funeral expenses. Considering that I am a college student, I have very little financial resources to offer my family during this frustrating, trying time. As such, I am reaching out to all of you—friends, family, and the like—for financial support as we prepare to bury my mother and pay her debts.
