A couple weeks ago Adam & Elisa noticed swelling around their 19-month old son, Wilson's right hip. The area was extremely tender to the touch to the point he could not sit down. X-rays showed a rotation in the hip so they began working to correct it. Over the following two weeks inflammation and pain worsened and it became apparent that in the center of the inflammation was not a bone but a soft tissue mass. Last week, they were hoping to find that the mass was a cyst that could drained or removed easily. The surgical team did not feel comfortable moving forward without more blood work and an MRI. Wilson had a MRI, which showed a teratoma tumor approximately the size of a softball. The reason his hip was rotated is because the tumor has pushed it out of place. These tumors usually form in the womb, 90% of the time they are benign.
On Monday, September 13, Wilson underwent a surgical procedure to biopsy the tumor and surrounding lymph nodes. Wilson's oncologist and surgeon looked at the mass under microscope and they're pretty sure it's cancerous. The doctors also concluded the cancer has likely spread to Wilson's lymph system as well because the lymph node they biopsied was necrotic. Another MRI will be done at some point to check his lungs and other places too.
Adam & Elisa will have to wait for the official pathology to come back, (3-4 days) because treatment will vary depending on what exactly it is. After that, they'll install a port in Wilson's chest and start chemotherapy that same day.
Wilson will most likely begin chemotherapy treatment on Monday, September 20. The standard is six rounds of chemotherapy to start. Wilson will be admitted to the hospital for each round of chemo for at least 5-6 days, and treatments will be three weeks apart. Doctors will do another MRI halfway through the chemo to see if the cancer is responding and if the tumor is removable at that point.
Adam, Elisa, Otto (2), Wilson (19 mo.), and twins (coming soon!) thank you for your prayers and support. So many have reached out to encourage them, given gifts, brought food, and coffee over the last few weeks. This has been incredibly difficult already and they have a long road ahead.
For those who would like to help financially with medical bills, food, transportation, and medications please use this GoFundMe to donate to their family!
Wilson is a fighter. And God still does miracles. We know his life is in God's hands and so many prayers are going up on Wilson's behalf. Please don't stop. We can feel them and know Wilson can feel them, and we will need them in months to come.
