The Problem

Ballet has traditionally been a Eurocentric, elitist art form excluding people to participate and enjoy it's benefits due to race, size, age and social class. Although Black ballet dancers have been prominent in the UK since the Windrush generation (and beyond), there is still a huge lack of diversity and equity for people of Black heritage. This includes dancers, teachers, examiners, choreographers, artistic directors and so on. Whilst there is currently a shift in including more Black students in organisations, one aspect remains forgotten in accessing such activities - affordability. With more than half of Black children living in poverty in the UK, this is an imperative issue to fix - now more than ever.

The Solution

Pointe Black provides a safe-haven for children and adults in the community. Our affordable classes provide high-quality ballet training from an early stage (18 months), from all Black teachers. Our inclusive studio empowers and encourages everyBODY, with a skin-toned ballet wear policy, a nurturing teaching style, and positive affirmations at the end of all classes.

Your Support

Our fees start from £5 each class, covering studio costs. Other aspects are provided free of charge to all students, including show performances (costumes, props etc). Skin-toned ballet wear are imported from America, as no UK retailer has all the shades need for the Black community in all sizes. These are provided to the students at a subsidised rate excluding delivery and custom fees.

Your support allows us to continue our mission with keeping ballet affordable for our students, current and new. Our hope is to extend our activities across London, with our Tribe Days in school holidays and an Esteemed class for elders.
