PB (AKA Poppy Boy) lifesaving operation

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Cath and I am setting up this page because so many people I want to help with the medical costs for my darling PB.

PB’s health deteriorated very quickly at weekend, he was eating in the morning and by evening he was lethargic and refusing to eat and vomiting and was rushed into the vets earlier the next morning.

After a series of tests and ultrasound scans, it has been ascertained that he has gallstones and one had moved into his bile duct and caused a blockage. Due to the infection caused, he has an enlarged liver and pancreas and he was in a lot of pain.

After hours of discussions with the veterinary surgeons and family today it has been decided that he needs an emergency operation to try and remove the blockage or remove the gallbladder altogether. However, this surgery comes with high risks because his albumin level is very low and it is this that regulates his blood pressure while under anaesthetic, therefore he could have a seizure. The vet has suggested him having a blood transfusion before the operation so that he is in a decent condition to undergo the anaesthetic.

Besides these problems they have found that he’s diabetic, and he is having insulin treatment. This may go into remission when the inflammation of his internal organs (Feline Triaditis) has gone back to normal and the bile duct has been unblocked or the gallbladder removed. The only thing that’s keeping him alive at the moment is the medication that he is receiving through IV drip.

I know many people from a Facebook group that I am a member of are wanting to donate, as are friends and family members, which I will be eternally grateful for, as the operation is going to cost around £5000 and that is not including the blood transfusion. In the last day he has wracked up a bill of £2000 for investigations and medication.

Some people might think that it’s not worth it and he’s just a cat. Well, PB adopted us at a time in our lives when things were bad. He gave myself and my two sons unconditional love and has continued to do so for the last 12 years. So there is no way that I’m going to give up on this little soul now, we have relied on him from time to time and now he is relying on us. I intend to do my best for him, as he is a much loved and valued member of our family

Thank you for taking time to read this and thank you for your kind support

Update Tuesday 9th December - update. PB was classed as critical yesterday and needed a blood transfusion as he probably wouldn’t have survived an operation.

A lovely local lady came forward and offered her cat Domino to be tested at the vets to see if he was a match do PB. He was perfect - and he gave blood which was then transferred to PB.

Since the blood transfusion, PB has perked up, his temperature has risen back to normal and his Albumin levels have risen. The vet is happy to operate in the morning.

Update - Wednesday 10th Dec - nightmare of a day. Halfway through the operation PB started losing lots of blood - the vet phoned saying he had lost 1/3 of his blood and needed more and could I take my other cat TT (Tuna Turner) down immediately for blood profiling. He wasn’t an ideal candidate as he came to us as a stray and we don’t know how old he is. We thought maybe 8 or 9 now - and age 9 is the cut off for giving blood.

However, the vet thought he could be about 8 years old after a full examination so went through with the profiling and TT was a match for PB.

Therefore, I have left TT at the vets overnight and they said they would take syringes of blood from TT to put small quantities into PB - plus TT was there if PB needed a full transfusion.
