Last night at around 7PM there was a gas explosion in my granddaughter Savannah's four-plex apartment. She lives with her fiancee Dylan and their two infant boys on the second floor. One moment they were having fun with some relatives and visitors, the next moment their home was utterly obliterated. Savannah was trapped in the bathroom - the door had to be smashed in to rescue her - my 4 month old great-grandson wound up under an overturned couch - my future son-in-law was literally blown out of his shoes. Worst of all, the only staircase to escape was vaporized. We still don't know how they got out, but they all did - without so much as a scratch.
"Things can be replaced, lives cannot." This rings so true in all our heads today. Thank our lucky stars, we don't need to replace any lives, but now it comes time to start to replace the things. Savannah and Dylan lost everything, apparently even her car.
They basically need everything a family of four needs to start over, beginning with a place to stay, clothing for two adults and two infant sons, basic furnishings, formula, diapers, and foodstock for a couple of months, just to get back on their feet. Just think of what you would need if one night your house literally disappeared from around you in a fireball, and you were left with nothing but the clothes on your back.
They, and we, feel so fortunate to be alive, and to be living in the most generous country in the world. It is not normal for our family to depend on the generosity of strangers, but in these times it is comforting to know that things like GoFundMe exist for just this purpose. Savannah, Dylan, Kameron and Nathan - and our entire family - thank you from the bottom of our hearts for any help you can provide. And remember, what goes round comes round, you reap what you sow. "It will be paid forward, and it will be rewarded." Thank you!
