Breast cancer, it turns out, sucks in lots of special ways. Not only does it threaten your life, make you walk through hell and back, and render your bra collection obsolete, it is also extremely expensive, even with insurance. When folks ask, "What is your life worth?" Cancer gives you the answer in the form of a bill that you have to pay.

When our friend, Rebecca Barnes confided in us that breast cancer had not just deflated her cup size but also her bank account, we found that totally unacceptable.  Her life is worth far more to us than the figure on her medical bills, even though that figure is rather large.

"Hello Friends..."  Rebecca Barnes's greeting in her regular Facebook Live videos gave us all a glimpse into her fight against breast cancer. What started out as #SaveLefty eventually turned into a package deal as doctors found cancer in both of Rebecca's breasts resulting in months of surgery and radiation. Still, she continued to welcome us in to her fight and tried to use this trial for good as she encouraged women to get their mammograms. Thus far, through Rebecca's efforts, over 130 woman have reached out to tell her that her story got them to make the appointment. While cancer is never a good thing, because of Rebecca's efforts, three women were able to catch their cancers and are now receiving treatment, which is a very good thing.

Rebecca Barnes is worth far more to Prince William County than her medical bills indicate. Beyond her efforts to encourage women to make their health a priority, she volunteers with OWL Volunteer Fire Department working tirelessly to keep our county safe. She was instrumental in starting Leadership Prince William that works to recruit and train up leaders in our community.  She was also the youngest chairman ever of the Prince William County Chamber of Commerce. Beyond that, she started Prince William Living, a local lifestyle magazine dedicated to celebrating the people and events that make our community a special place to call home. Through her magazine, Rebecca has helped to promote local economic development, the arts, the non-profit community, and educational opportunities. Scrolling through Rebecca's Facebook page is like taking a grand tour of Prince William County; she is an integral part of our county in too many ways to list and all too often puts her love of community ahead of her love of self.

So we are asking folks to return the love that Rebecca gives so freely to Prince William County.  Even with her insurance, her fight against breast cancer has left her with a huge financial debt that must be paid off.   Even though she is a public person when it comes to helping others, anyone who has met Rebecca knows that she is stubborn when it comes to asking for help for herself.  So we are asking for her, because we know what Rebecca Barnes means to Prince William County.  Please help us help someone who done so much to help others.  Help us #PayOffLefty.
