Lucy became ill in March with Covid-19 in NYC at the beginning of the pandemic. She was one of the first striken when most of the world was still not grasping the seriousness of this virus. On March 25th she asked her brother to drive to Northshore University Hospital, while she followed behind in her own car so he'd not get sick too. She didn't call 911 because they would have taken her to one of the hospitals in Queens, already overwhelmed with Covid patients, she knew it'd be fatal.
Lucy was in the ICU on a ventilator for almost 3 weeks. Her situation was so dire that her family had started funeral preparations as the prognosis was not good on Lucy's recovery. Yet, strong of will she held on and a miracle happened and Lucy was off the ventilator on April 10th!
Lucy went home on April 18th. It was a big milestone. Unfortunately the road to recovery has been very painful and slow. She experienced short term memory loss, bed soars that took almost 4 months to heal, PTSD and then she was diagnosed with stridor (vocal cord paralysis). She could hardly breath and ended up back in hospital in September to get an emergency tracheostomy, staying in the hospital again for another 15 days.
She had a second surgery right before Thanksgiving, unable to speak until recently.
Her company placed her on furlough while she was in the ICU back in March, and she was subsequently laid off in July. Lucy, as many others during this pandemic, has not been able to find a job. It is also be very difficult for her to do an online interview right now with a trach as you can see on the video,
Despite it all, Lucy maintains such a positive attitude, grateful for having survived this terrible experience when many have not, and even if she can't spend the holidays with her family, she feels blessed. She gets out of bed every day with an optimistic attitude, trying not to fall into depression and doing everything to recover.
Her unemployment will run out if a few months and her COBRA, medical and living expenses will be hard to cover.
Lucy has always been a generous, kind, funny, supportive and an amazing friend. You know that if you need her she will drop everything to help you.
Let's help her now.
