URGENT Help newlyhoused Indigenous folks pay rent

Do you have a little extra in your budget and want to make a significant difference in the lives of urban Indigenous people? Please consider giving to this Gofundme. Many are on their way to the job market, and the positive impact of having their own space can already be tangible. Obtaining financial support at the time of transition could have a major impact on the future of these people.

 

As colonizers living on stolen land, we are well aware that we must redistribute our privileges to Indigenous communities. What better way to give back to the communities than to pay "rent" by donating a portion of your salary to Indigenous people/organizations. One good way to share your money as settlers is to help some Indigenous folks who have recently been given the opportunity to have an apartment to pay their rent.

 

In the last few months, the Indigenous Support Worker Project, a fantastic organization by and for Indigenous people, has received funding that has allowed 12 Indigenous people to find housing and pay for it until March 31, 2022. ISWP and community members have put in a great deal of effort and work to make this possible and furnish each apartment. However, it is not easy to go from the street to paying rent and the bills that come with it, considering the poor income that the government offers. Many of them have started to look for solutions, but the reality is that the time frame is too short for applying those solutions. ISWP is also hoping for a positive response for a rental subsidy which will allow financial support as early as May.

 

WE URGENTLY NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THESE PEOPLE WHO HAVE PUT SO MUCH EFFORT INTO IMPROVING THEIR LIFE CONDITIONS AND WHO FINALLY FEEL AT HOME ON THEIR OWN LAND DO NOT LOSE THEIR HOUSING FOR ONLY ONE MONTH OF NOT BEING ABLE TO PAY.

 

We are asking for the help of allies and the community to raise enough funds to support these 12 people in paying their rent in April and ensure their basic expenses. The lack of funding for Indigenous organizations is always a sad reality, which explains the difficulty of supporting their members financially.

En tant que colonisateur habitant sur des terres volées, nous sommes bien au courant que nous devons redistribuer nos privilèges aux communautés autochtones. Un des moyens pour supporter les personnes autochtones est de payer un ''loyer'' à ceux-ci en redonnant une partie de votre salaire à des personnes/organismes autochtones. Quoi de mieux que de payer notre loyer en tant que colonisateur en aidant des personnes autochtones ayant récemment eu l'opportunité d'avoir un apparment à payer leur loyer.

 

Dans les derniers mois, le Indigenous Support Worker Project, une extraordinaire organisation par et pour les autochtones, ont reçu un financement qui a permit à 12 personnes autochtones de se trouver un logement et de payer celui-ci jusqu'au 31 mars 2022. Énormément d'effort et de travail ont été mis par l'organismes ISWP ainsi que par les membres de la communauté afin de rendre cela possible et afin de meubler chaque appartement. Cependant, il n'est pas évident de passer de la rue à payer un loyer et les factures qui viennent avec, considérant les médiocres revenus que le gouvernement offre. Plusieurs ont commencé à chercher des solutions, mais la réalité est que le délais est trop court pour arriver à les mettre en place. ISWP sont aussi dans l'espoir de réponse positive pour une subvention locative ce qui permettra un support financier dès le mois de mai pour ces personnes.

 

NOUS AVONS DONC UN URGENT BESOIN DE S'ASSURER QUE LES PERSONNES QUI ONT MIS DES EFFORTS DANS L'AMÉLIORATION DE LEUR CONDITION ET QUI SE SENTENT ENFIN CHEZ EUX SUR LEUR PROPRE TERRE NE PERDENT PAS LEUR LOGEMENT POUR UN MOIS DE NON PAIEMENT.

 

Nous demandons l'aide des alliés et de la commuauté pour récolter suffisamment de fonds pour supporter ces 12 personnes dans le paiement de leur loyer en avril et assurer leur dépense de bases. Soulignons que le manque de financement auprès des organismes autochtones est toujours une triste réalité, ce qui explique la difficulté de supporter leurs membres financièrement.
