My family recently experienced an unexpected job loss and resultant health insurance loss. I was downsized from my corporate job here in Arkansas a few weeks ago completely unexpectedly. Last week our son Matthew had an accident that resulted in broken bones in his right forearm. We had to rush him into the emergency room for X-ray and treatment and he has follow up appointments with an orthopedic surgeon for continuing treatment. Megan and I elected the cobra continuation coverage as a stop gap since we had already satisfied our deductible for the year with Matthew’s monthly medical expenses (his food, feeding supplies, and trache equipment are billed monthly to our insurance from his DME) but the cost of paying for the cobra has proven impossible for us at this time and without paying it none of his hospital visit, ongoing treatments at the orthopedist, or his needed monthly supplies will be covered. The premium is $2400 per month. I have been fortunate enough to receive an offer for a similar position within my network at a different company and currently going through the pre employment steps anxiously awaiting a start date (projected to be mid July) but this will mean another cross country move for my family and a short time without health insurance for Megan, the children, and I until the new benefits begin.
