Hello,
I’m Krystal Boyer, mother of Jaxson Boyer. Jaxson had some pretty terrible luck the week after Thanksgiving and unfortunately had to get a craniotomy at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on December 4th, 2022.
Jaxson began suffering from a headache 5 days before his surgery. We all thought it was just a viral illness that he caught from his younger brother who was sick at the time Jaxson’s headache started. This all started on Tuesday, November 29th and by Friday evening he started vomiting and his fever spiked higher than it had been the rest of the week. By Saturday morning, he started to become lethargic so I took him to the hospital. I was anticipating he would get some IV fluids and he would be discharged home. After further workup in the emergency room, it was found that Jaxson was septic and had “air” in his brain. We were quickly transported to CHOP and within 4 hours of being there we were greeted by a neurosurgeon that told us Jaxson would need to have a craniotomy to wash out an abscess in his brain. His sinuses had created a tunnel into his brain. They put him as first priority on Sunday morning and by 7am he was in the OR. The neurosurgeon did their part of the surgery to wash out the brain and an ENT Dr cleaned out his sinuses.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t get all of the infection out of his brain during the surgery because of parts that it had spread to. He will be on IV antibiotics at home for at least 4-6 weeks through a PICC line.
Our insurance company quoted us $2,000 out of pocket per week for the IV antibiotics. Since it’s the end of the year, we will not be meeting our deductible so most likely we will need to pay for all of it out of pocket.
We truly are blessed with the amount of love and support we have been receiving. Jaxson came home late on Friday, December 9th and has been doing well at home and hopes to return to school after the holidays.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Krystal(mom)
