Help pay for Grian's surgery on his broken legs
Donation protected
We are Paul, Marianne and Arlo — and our beloved 2-year-old Irish Setter: Grian. He has been with us almost a year since we rehomed and adopted him last November. He is deeply affectionate and super friendly to everyone he meets. On Sunday October 8 Grian had a horrific fall after jumping from a roof on to tarmac hard ground. He didn't realise how high he was leaping from. He broke his two front legs badly. We rushed him to UCD Veterinary Hospital where he was hospitalised in intensive care for four days and underwent complex surgery on his legs with implants of metal plates and pins. Fortunately he had no internal injuries.
When we arrived at the emergency dept they mentioned the option to euthanise him, which was a horrific and upsetting thought. We could not do this to him or put ourselves through dealing with that option if there was a possibility to repair him for a good recovery. The orthopaedic team at UCD have a good reputation — with the surgery plan and resting for 6-8 weeks, the specialist vets have said he should have a positive outcome after recovery. The x-rays showed that the bone breaks were clean and not within the joints; so the implants will give strength and stability more easily and quickly. We don't have pet insurance for Grian and we are looking at a bill of €5,474 for the surgery and emergency treatment.
At this time, we do not have this money but we could not let him down, so any donations towards this cost would be deeply appreciated. We've had to pay most the bill upfront, we paid by credit card — but we still need funds to cover the full amount. Any donation, no matter how much, will help towards the costs. Thank you so much, Paul, Marianne, Arlo and Grian.

UPDATE, 28, Nov, 2023
Many thanks to all who have generously contributed to the surgery fundraiser for Grian’s broken legs. He was back at UCD Veterinary Hospital again this week for x-rays. His left leg is healing very well, however, his right leg, which has been swollen for the past while, is not yet in the state it should be for correct reunion and bone growth. It is likely that he will need another surgical procedure in four weeks to better help set the bone. He is coping well with the recovery and downtime, despite not getting to run yet. We look forward to his full recovery and for him to be running again. The fundraiser is still open for donations — we're almost there.
UPDATE: 28 Dec, 2023
Grian was at UCDVH for x-rays shortly before Christmas and the vet was satisfied with his progress. He will not need any more surgeries or return visits. He will continue to be on short walks on the lead — and should be able to start getting back to running in a few weeks.
