help with costs of looking after all hedgehogs in our care.

Hi, my name is Kelly and I am the founder and lead rehabilitator of Haydock Hedgehog Helpers Rescue. We currently have 32 hedgehog in our care, and turning away approximately 5-10 day because we are at capacity. Whilst 32 may seem like a small number compared to other rescues, we are a home-based rescue with a purpose built hogspital, we receive no funding other than public donations, and there are no paid staff. I also have some disabilities that limit how much physical and mental load I can carry. I have amazing volunteers to come and help every day cleaning and weighing the hoggies, but all other tasks are up to me, including all fundraising.

With this in mind, 32 is a lot of mouths to feed, injections to give, PPE and cleaning material used, topical and oral medications to administer, a lot of vet trips, and the list goes on. Looking at our published financial accounts, it costs around £1000 a month to run the rescue in it's current form. However, donations are at an all time low with the cost of living crisis putting a lot of people in awful situations.
