I am hopefully campaigning for Paws’itive Teams www.PawsTeams.org Service Dogs for San Diegans. The Mission of Paws'itive Teams is to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs who live in San Diego County, by utilizing the skills of highly trained Service and Therapy Dogs. Founded by Carol Davis and Charli King in 1997, Paws’itive Teams was officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in California in May of 1999 (EIN 33-0851474). The organization began with a focus on individuals with limited mobility. Over the years, it has matured to include Service and Therapy Dogs for PTSD, children with a multitude of limitations, Facility Dogs, and offers many options for our Military Heros. Paws’itive Teams has also developed a very unique “Goal Directed” Therapy Dog program called Paws’itive Animal Assisted Therapy. Together with licensed professionals and amazing Therapy Dog volunteers, the teams are able to help physically and mentally challenged children and adults to reach their short and long term goals.
Today I am asking for help raising funds for the purchase of a purpose bred Labrador Retriever Puppy. One of our incredible service dog trainers is ready this April to begin training her SIXTH service dog! Our Service Dogs are diligently and skillfully trained for a minimum of 2 years before they are placed with an individual. Occasionally our puppies are donated or rescued, but it is very important to know and understand the instincts, temperament, and possible health risks of this new puppy. We will be looking for a puppy with great retrieval drive, solid temperament, full health clearance and a breeder who will provide lifetime support. This will maximize the chances that this puppy will grow into a Multipurpose Service Dog that could possibly serve a wounded veteran with mobility issues as well as provide PTSD support. Our service dogs are placed and have extensive transition training. All of our service dog recipients become a part of the Paws’itive Teams family and the dogs remain the property and family of Paws’itive Teams for the remainder of their lives. They are loved and cherished for the amazing gifts they give every day.
The money that is raised through this campaign will be used only for the purpose of obtaining the most suitable Labrador puppy. The cost of such a puppy can vary. There is a lot of money invested in these puppies between birth and the time they come to us at 8 weeks. It is a true labor of love that these breeders put into their puppies to prepare them for a Service Dog career. Any extra funds will be used to help with vet care, feeding and the additional costs it takes to raise a service dog.

Paws’itive Teams means the world to me and has made a huge impact on my life. I found them 10 years ago when I was interested in making my Golden Retriever, Pacman, into a Therapy Dog. As a new dog trainer, I was also curious about training Service Dogs. I took Pacman through Therapy Dog Prep School and I was hooked. I have since taken Prep school 9 times with my own dogs and those of friends and clients. Now I am lucky enough to be an instructor and share all of the wonderful things I have learned. During the first class I was so impressed with the dedication of the five volunteer instructors and the content of the class. We learned about the different opportunities for San Diego Therapy Dogs, insurance organizations, wheelchair etiquette, hospital protocol, and liabilities. We even had the chance to do a real life visit to a convalescent home. Since then I have had four certified dogs in the PAAT (Paw’sitive Animal Assisted Therapy) program. We do a very unique “Goal Directed” Therapy in which we work directly with professionals to obtain certain short and long term goals with clients. I am currently working at Clairemont High School with Stanley, my black labrador. He visits the medically fragile classroom and then meets with the speech therapy class where we play games to encourage eye contact, language, vocal tones, and socialization with peers. I am striving for him to get approved for the Court Dog Program where he will bond and sit in in the witness box with children testifying against their abusers. My Goldendoodle, Spanky, works at New Dawn High School for transitional students who build confidence in a six week program learning how to train their dog in Rally Obedience. I feel so fortunate to work with other dedicated teams as well as professionals with such a passion for helping these wonderful children. There is not a day that I volunteer that I don’t drive away feeling grateful to be a part of Paws’itive Teams.
If we are able to raise $3000+ to support this new puppy in training, I would be elated. There is not a more trustworthy cause in San Diego. Seeing the recipients of our Service Dogs at their graduation would soften even the toughest soul. Our dogs happily give everything they have to their handler and the handlers we pick are just as gracious and committed to their dog. A new purpose bred Labrador Retriever Puppy will give our fabulous trainer every opportunity to create a multipurpose Service Dog to help an individual in need. Even the smallest donation is a blessing and we would happily welcome you into the Paws’itive Teams family. If you are moved to do more, we also offer full puppy sponserships.
Please contact me for more information if you have any questions on sponserships or just have questions before donating. I am available to share anything you want to know about Paws’itive Teams, Service or Therapy Dogs, or anything else about dogs in generalJ Thank you in advance for helping me with my cause!
