Hello everyone and welcome to the GoFundMe page for PAWS for the Homeless!
(Meet 'Hero'! One of the newest members of our team)
PAWS for the Homeless is a community focused project with a mission to inspire hope and healing to those in their time of need through the unconditional love, comfort, and warmth dogs can provide. We will accomplish our goal by bringing certified, licensed, trained, and insured Therapy Dogs to visit homeless and family shelters in and around the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. During the visits, our team of volunteers, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds will interact and spend significant time with residents at each shelter creating connections that embody hope, healing, comfort, and love.
My inspiration for this project was cultivated by a personal experience I had volunteering at a homeless shelter in the Northern Virginia area as well as my own love for dogs and firm belief in the healing power they can provide to anyone no matter the circumstance. While volunteering, I heard the story of a young couple that were living in the shelter. They were close in age to myself (early 30's), both had lost their jobs, and neither had family that could provide financial support during their time of need. As a result, they were forced to give up their apartment and move into the shelter while they searched for work. Not only had they lost their jobs and home, they were also forced to give up their dog for adoption since they could no longer provide for it. After hearing that story, I began thinking of other non-traditional methods to make an impact in the homeless community and after several months, PAWS for the Homeless was born.
PAWS for the Homeless has joined forces and has the the privilege of partnering with Summit Therapy Animal Services to make our vision a reality! Summit Therapy Animal Services is a licensed, insured, and certified Therapy Dog organization that specializes in therapeutic healing with their team of specially trained Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds (meet our furry team below). Summit Therapy Animal Services is dedicated to helping people achieve their rehabilitation and therapy goals through the use of animals. They work with people of all ages, but their specialty is working with children who are affected by intellectual, emotional or physical challenges, as well as families impacted by autism. Their team of volunteers currently visits Hospitals of all types, Retirement and Rehabilitation Facilities, as well as several Veterans Organizations and have now committed to visiting homeless and family shelters through our project. But we can only make it happen with your support and help!
As with any volunteer and non-profit based organization, donations are essential to the operation and meeting the goals set out by the foundation. Your donation to PAWS for the Homeless will ensure our mission to inspire hope and healing to those in their time of need through the unconditional love, comfort, and warmth dogs can provide is a success! Not only will your donation have a direct impact on the lives on countless people who need just a little boost of happiness and love, your donation will support the following:
- Supplies and food for the dogs (our pups love their Frosty Paws ice cream)
- New and future training for the dogs
- Veterinary costs for the dogs
- Costs to further grow the current team of trained Therapy Dogs
- Grooming costs
- Travel costs associated with transporting the dogs to the site visits
- Operational costs of the Therapy Organization
Together with your support, we can make our vision and dream of spreading hope, comfort, healing, and love to those in their time of need a reality! If you have any questions or would like to inquire about other ways you can help our cause, please contact us.
If you're willing and able, please donate and share our cause so we can continue to grow our team and bring our dogs to as many shelters as possible! Thank you for your interest and support for PAWS for the Homeless! Please take some time to meet our furry team below!

'Hero' loves to visit people of all ages, but has a particular fondness for children. His favorite time of the day is a three-way tie between walk time, nap time and dinner time. Hero is a recovering sock eater and has been sober for over a year. Thankfully, these days he sticks to dog treats.
Hero has a laid back personality with just a touch of goof ball.
'Nicodemus,' or “Nic” for short, is a 1.5 year old Golden Retriever, and works as a therapy dog with special needs children and hospital patients. Nic has a bright and cheerful attitude toward life, and feels play is an essential part of life. Everything in life can be played with; paper, keys, pens, shoes, a leaf, a penny, a rock, a stuffed animal or a ball, and he feels it is his job to share his play with everyone. Of course when it is time to relax Nic does that with gusto also.
'Christopher Chip,' goes by “Chip”, is a 1.5 year old White German Shepherd with a Golden Retriever personality. He is a therapy dog who works with special needs children and adults, the elderly at Assisted Living Facilities, and wounded veterans at USO events. Chip’s favorite game is fetch and loves to put his rubber ducky on a person’s lap and urge them to toss it in the air.
Gideon 'Gid' is an 8 year old German Shepherd who has worked as a therapy dog for 7 years. He has worked with kids in the Emotional Disturbed (ED) Program at school, and loves visiting seniors at Assisted Living Facilities. Gid has visited schools, colleges, churches, nursing homes, homeless shelters, hospitals and respite centers. His favorite activity is doing tricks and giving “doggie kisses” to his friends. He is a very handsome dog and is often asked to have his picture taken.
