Paws For A Cause: Luna’s Surgery Fund
Donation protected
Hello Everyone,
I’m reaching out with a heavy heart. My name is Mackenna Friesen, and I’m fundraising for my sweet puppy Luna. She’s a mini Dachshund with a bright personality and a resilient heart. On August 15, 2024, just two days before her 3rd birthday, Luna suffered an injury while playing outside. We rushed her to VCA Veterinary Hospital, where she was diagnosed with suspected Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD).
Luna is now on a strict 6-week home care recovery plan, taking three different pain medications and a muscle relaxant. She can still walk a little, but her back legs aren’t functioning like they used to. It’s a very scary situation for everyone who loves Luna. The veterinarians have advised that she will need surgery, which is not cheap. The estimated cost is between $10,000 and $12,000, including X-rays and an MRI by a neurosurgeon.
There are many uncertainties and worries about whether Luna’s condition will decline or stay the same, but surgery seems inevitable. We are doing our best to stay positive and give her the best chance at recovery.
A little bit about us: I’m 19 and living in Victoria, Canada, with my best friend Mackenzie (20). Together, we’re balancing work and taking care of both our puppies, Rosa and Luna. I’ve known Luna since before she was born, as I used to care for her mom, Fiona. Before Luna, I rescued my other dog Rosa, who had been abused and neglected. I wanted Rosa to have a buddy, and about a year later, Luna was born. They’ve been best friends ever since, playing and cuddling every day—though they can’t play together now due to Luna’s strict recovery plan.
Mackenzie and I moved from Alberta to this beautiful island in 2023, facing many changes and challenges along the way, but always figuring things out together. Luna is so loved and deserves the best care possible. Outside of our home, I work as a disability caretaker in the community full-time, and Mackenzie is in school while also working full-time. Despite our other obligations, Luna’s well-being is our top priority.
I’ve been documenting Luna’s journey with photos and videos, which I’ll be sharing on social media. I’ll include them below so you can get to know Luna and our little family, and stay updated on her progress.
