Please Pause for Pups

While on family business in Florida, Gail Johns found a stray dog on the side of the road. For the week she was visiting, she scoured up and down the roads where she found the dog to see if anyone recognized her. She had locals help her post on Facebook Pet finder groups. Nobody claimed the abandoned dog. Upon the time of her departure, the dog had become very attached and dependent on the safety of Gail‘s loving nature. Gail found herself unable to leave the dog at a shelter, changed her plane ticket and brought it home to become part of the family with Gail, her husband and their two dogs . After her initial vet visit, they learned this little girl they named Mookie was pregnant with a litter of four puppies. Though this was never part of the plan, Gail and her husband Dane took on the responsibility of raising these puppies to find them loving homes. They soon learned that Mookie had hookworms, and the young puppies were all infected from nursing. They successfully fought the infection and all seemed well and bright for their future finally. Four days before the four puppies were scheduled to get their first round of shots and go to their forever homes, something was wrong and they were rushed to the vet, where it was determined that the puppies were infected with Parvovirus.

Within 48 hours, all four puppies fell ill. In the middle of the night, they were rushed to a 24 hour vet in Concord. Even though they had started treatment the day they were diagnosed with symptoms, in only three days It had taken the life of one of the four puppies. The remaining three are fighting for their lives in home care, with frequent emergency visits to Plymouth Animal Hospital. The bills keep piling up and on day seven their mother Mookie fell ill, as well.

Dane and Gail have taken this on with all the kindness in their hearts. They have paused their lives, taken time off work, forgone sleep, and so much more to support these unexpected, though no-less-loved babies and give them the best chance for survival.

However, the vet bills have added up in a big way, with more expected. The first few rounds of treatment and several overnight stays at the Veterinary ICU have reached $8,000. Treatment for the remaining three puppies is expected to reach an additional $8,000. These costs are falling squarely on Dane and Gail, at the moment. Factoring in their lost wages and expenses of caring for their own dogs, the puppies, and commuting for vet visits, not to mention the emotional and physical exhaustion they are dealing with, they are getting hit hard in many ways. They are good people, doing good things.

Dane and Gail have given all of their hearts to these puppies and their mother. Please help them give these brave little pups and their strong mother a fighting chance.
