Paul entered the Marine Corps to serve his country and fight in the Gulf War. After it was over he became a police officer so he could continue to serve and help others.
Once again America entered war with Iraq, Paul rejoined the Marine Corps to deploy and help. He deployed twice to Iraq and was injured but that didn't stop him. Paul deployed again to Afghanistan and sustained more injuries, upon his returned he was in and out of the doctors’ offices. It was clear now that it would be years not months for Paul to heal.
He was transferred to Wounded Warrior Battalion in San Diego, where he spent 11 months getting poked, probed, and evaluated. Paul’s traumatic brain injury which causes memory blanks, short term memory loss, and lack of focus will never be repaired but he was given techniques to strengthen the mind. Every three months he receives 40 shots to his neck, forehead and skull to relieve his debilitating migraines. His PTSD needs constant therapy, and is a daily struggle.
After five years of treatment, medication and therapy Paul's therapist encouraged him to take the basic motorcycle safety course. He passed the first time with a perfect score! I'm so proud of him. This tool (the motorcycle) will encourage him to leave the house and be surrounded by his peers.
The goal is for him to join clubs that ride with veterans. The therapist at the Vetern's Hospital believes camaraderie might be the missing link to his success. Paul would have a new focus to that help other veterans returning from deployments and share his experiences.
Unfortunately, the down payment is just not in the family budget….his heart is broken. I see such an improvement in Paul just by taking the class. I can only image what success he will have if he joined a veteran’s group. That is why we are asking for anything that you can spare. We know it's a tough time of the year but this would be Paul's Christmas miracle!
