My name is Noah George Ogendi Nyamweya. I am a graduate student with Simon Fraser University pursuing my Master program in Education.
On 21st September, I received horrific news from home in Nairobi, Kenya, that no parent should ever hear.
My 24-year-old son, Paul, who works as a chief pilot instructor at the Skymax Aviation School in Nairobi Kenya, was involved in a horrific accident. He was taking his student out on a routine flight training session at Wilson Airport when at a height of just below 1000 feet, the engine stalled causing the airplane to nose-dive into the grounds of nearby Nairobi National Park.

Paul sustained massive facial injuries, especially at his left jaw bones. He lost 6 teeth and chipped 4 others. He shattered the bones on his left wrist (distal radius fractures), and attained injuries to the tendons on the fingers of his right hand. During the accident, upon impact on the ground, the engine of airplane flew out of its compartment and landed on Paul’s thighs, crushing the femur bones of both his legs. Thankfully, his vital organs, his spinal structure and his nervous system were not critically damaged in the incident. More than the agonizing physical injuries, my son is under immense emotional distress, especially after learning that his student, Charles, had died on 24th September as a result of his injuries.
The financial burdens for the surgeries and therapies are immense, and the insurance coverage offered by the aviation school, despite the incident happening during work, is grossly insufficient (only USD25,000). The aviation school has also not been paying any other type of compensation that is required by law.
At the moment Paul's medical costs are:-
- facial & dental implants - est. USD 20000.
- Physiotherapy - USD1200 per month
- Trauma Counselor - totalling USD 400.
- Consultation and review cost - USD 100 per visit and 3 visits a month.
- Air travel to and from between Canada and Kenya - USD $3400
My situation was more complicated as l had to go on a job search and my engagement with SFU as a Tm is temporal and the pay is lean.
My family and I will be eternally grateful and indebted to you as you contribute financially to putting a smile back on Paul's face and strength back in all our hearts.
