I am Amber and my mother-in-law has cancer. Her name is Pauline Scott. Some people see the words "mother-in-law" and read it like they would a curse. While our path to becoming family was not easy, love is at its foundation.
It is never easy to find out someone you love has cancer; it also isn't all that unique or rare these days. We found out late last year that Mom has Adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Her support system, which includes her daughters, convinced her to seek care at one of the most reputable cancer treatment centers, MD Anderson Houston. This facility is about a 4-hour drive one way from her home in Lafayette, LA.
As an elementary school teacher, her life's work has been teaching young children in rural Louisiana. If you know her, then you know she has taken on leading Black History Month programs and celebration at her school as a volunteer for over 15 years now, bringing together a predominantly white faculty with her leadership and compassion.
I am raising funds to help with the financial burden she is facing right now. While insurance covers many expenses, it will not cover it all. Pauline has taken extended leave from work at this point as it is unsafe for her to be around children while she is receiving chemo treatment. Additionally, she will need surgery soon and will be receiving it out of state. One of the biggest expenses will be the month long stay that she and a caregiver will need to be in Houston for the surgery and recovery.
I humbly ask for your generosity and kindness on behalf of Pauline Scott. Anything that you can give is an indescribable gift during this uncertain time.
