Paul, my beloved husband and amazing father to our two children has recently been offered the opportunity to receive a potentially symptom reversing treatment for multiple sclerosis called autologous stem cell transplantation at Northwestern University in Chicago. This is the only treatment that exists for multiple sclerosis that has the potential to reverse symptoms and improve quality of life. Current treatments only aim to prevent future relapses. Our insurance has denied coverage for this important treatment. Out of pocket, this treatment costs $125,000.
Paul, has been battling multiple sclerosis (MS) since 2006. Since the day I met Paul, MS has always been a part of our lives. In the beginning we still enjoyed some of Paul's favorite activities such as hiking and biking. Paul even proposed to me on our favorite hiking spot, the Billy Goat trail. Over the years Paul has taken many different medications and sadly the disease has continued to worsen and the medications have ceased to halt the progression of his MS. Each MS relapse he has experienced over the past 12 years has left him with more and more disability. In 2007, Paul was placed on a medication that was very ineffective and he had 3 relapses in a row. Currently Paul continues to try to work as a carpenter, but struggles greatly with his limitations with walking, fatigue, heat intolerance and pain. Fatigue often prevents him from participating with his family in a meaningful way.
We are asking for your donations to help us afford this treatment for Paul as soon as possible. No contribution is too small. If Paul is able to be treated, he (and I) will need to travel back and forth to Chicago multiple times for him to receive treatment and be followed by doctors at Northwestern over the next several years.
