It's never been easy for me to ask for help, but I've reached a point where my situation has become something of an emergency.
About 5 years ago I cracked a tooth. Badly. My dentist managed to save the root, I had a root canal and then a series of crowns that failed time after time. Finally I was told it was hopeless and the tooth had to come out. I had it removed and got a flipper to cover the space and a space I already had way in the back of my mouth that I had never addressed. A few months later I was ready to schedule an implant...and then came COVID19.
All dentist offices in NYC shut down for nearly 9 months. When they finally reopened again I was able to schedule the first part of the implant process, the installation of the socket. I had that done.
Then, things started to get really bad. My professional work in illustration and advertising almost completely dried up due to the pandemic.
My partner, who is a cancer patient, got furloughed from his job in publishing. His health is actually okay now because he got into a wonderful drug study at Sloan Kettering that has been nothing short of miraculous. However, I am on my partner's health insurance and we have had to switch to COBRA to remain insured. The cost is manageable now, but it is going to quadruple in a few months.
Because I've been wearing this flipper for so long, I just discovered there is some damage to the teeth on either side of the missing one that has to be taken care of before I get the replacement tooth installed. I do have dental insurance, but the cost of the work and of the replacement tooth is going to far exceed my annual deductible. Despite being a prominent tooth, this is still considered a cosmetic procedure.
My short term immediate goal with this fundraiser is to raise enough money to get the dental work I need done and to get my implant installed. Anything raised in excess of that goal will help me remain insured in the coming months. Hopefully the economy is on an upswing and my need will be temporary.
It was tough to make the decision to ask for help. There's a lot of shame in tooth loss. It's embarrassing. It was awful just to take the picture for this fundraiser. If my work has ever given you a little joy and you are able to, I would be so grateful if you could toss me a buck or two to help me through this time.
Thank you.
