Paul J Miller

On the 22 of January, 2024, the world lost an extraordinary human being. Paul Miller gave his all, to everyone. This often came in the form of working as an Emergency Medicine nurse.
One of the many nurses that Paul trained over the years, said it well: “Are you familiar with the term ‘a painter’s painter’ or ‘a writer’s writer’? Paul was a nurse’s nurse. When I didn’t know the answer, I went to Paul. When I couldn’t put a piece of equipment together, I went to Paul. If I ever needed an IV start or a complicated IV drip calculation, I knew I could go to him if I had to. But most importantly, I have always known Paul to be the first one to jump into the room of the sickest and most unstable patient. When the wheels were falling off the department he would put them back on, and when he wasn’t helping or teaching me something he was making me laugh. As we all know, in a busy ER laughter is worth its weight in gold. When Paul wasn’t on shift I sometimes joked that I was wearing my invisible W.W.P.M.D. bracelet. For me, Paul was often the compass directing me back to the right thing to do.”
For those of us that had the honor and privilege of working with Paul over his many years of service and dedication to the profession and the medical community at large, we are better for it. His knowledge and scope, far outweighed his title. He had an uncanny ability to understand some of the most complex systems. This was the case both at work and home.
Several years ago, he took his knowledge, experience and his unending energy and enthusiasm, and almost single-handedly led his Mom, recently diagnosed with cancer, on a journey few could even comprehend, much less go on. The result, more time then anyone could have predicted, for her to enjoy life and spend it with the ones she loved.
Those of us that had the pleasure of knowing Paul, colleagues, friends, family, loved ones, are better today for what he gave us.
We miss you Paul.
