On November 18th 2023, my brother in-law Paul survived a serious Ischemic Stroke that left him paralysed down his right side, with difficulty swallowing and unable to talk and walk. My sister Sally has since been caring for Paul, keeping him linked in with the country music family that they both created over the decades preceding and helping Paul with all of his daily tasks, including his intense rehabilitation. Sally has been Paul's rock as he has been hers since they started dating before I was even born.
Dr Edward Tobinick, M.D., the founder and Director of the Institute of Neurological Recovery, invented the remarkable ground breaking Perispinal Etanercept treatment for stroke and chronic brain injury in 2010 and in 2024 Paul was fortunate enough to be able to be treated by Dr. Tobinick.
Paul was determined to get to Florida and previously ran a GoFundMe campaign and it was only due to the generosity of many of his friends, family, and musical colleagues that he was able to have the treatment.
This treatment was invaluable to improving Paul’s physical, neurological, emotional, and functional progress. Improvements following his first and second PSE injections include:
Motor Function: Better walking gait; reduced spasticity; walking without AFO, occasionally without cane.
Upper Limb: Increased function, sensation, and dexterity in right hand and arm.
Speech: Clearer and faster when rested.
Sensory Recovery: Feels cold and hot; experiencing pain and hypersensitivity.
Cognition & Emotion: Brighter mood, humour returning, improved memory and problem-solving.
Fatigue: Still prominent but less debilitating; managed with rest.
As part of the treatment it is recommended that you return for another injection within 12 months.
Paul plans to return to Florida for this followup treatment, the cost of which will again be approximately $40,000 (for the injection treatment alone).
I have created this Go Fund Me page to assist Paul in covering the cost of this repeated injection, which we believe will help Paul with his neurologic dysfunction, pain and decreased quality of life, to basically gain some independence in daily living, with less pain. Currently Paul can mostly dress himself and take care of his personal care, but cannot go anywhere independently. Pain and fatigue are intermittent which inhibits quality of life. Paul’s one aim in life is to give back to the community and the way he knows is through music and friendship.
I know many of you have donated to this cause previously, and I know Paul is incredibly grateful for these donations. If you happen to be able to spare a small amount towards this treatment it will certainly take some financial pressure off Paul and Sally.
Message from Sally:
“We know Paul’s determination and love of music will drive his recovery process and we thank all our friends and family for your support through what has been a difficult time as we are still not able to live in our own home, having relocated to be closer to medical treatment and rehabilitation facilities. If you can help in any small way it will go a long way to ensure the best recovery is achievable for Paul in the months and years ahead.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are going to be very open and transparent with you all.”
