PATTI'S STORY:

A few years back, our sister Patti developed life-threatening blood clots in her lungs. Unbeknownst to any of us, she had inherited an underlying clotting disorder that went undetected all these years.

Patti miraculously survived not just one pulmonary embolism, but multiple large ones—in both lungs.

At the time it happened, Patti was a para-educator in the Ferndale School District in the Pacific Northwest, a position she had loved for nearly 20 years. She immensely enjoyed her work, but the clots had damaged Patti's lungs too much, forcing her to leave her school and students and, most of all, her beloved colleagues.

Medical management has been futile in resolving the stubborn clots, leaving Patti with compromised breathing. Further, the high pulmonary pressure these past few years has damaged her heart.

Hidden behind her big smile has been a medical battle few knew about. And her condition has deteriorated while our family could only watch and pray.

Last week Patti was notified that she had been approved for a highly specialized life-saving surgery pioneered at UCSD in San Diego.

Scheduled for March 5, Patti faces a very tricky operation with a long recovery. Yet if done correctly, it could possibly reverse the damage and extend Patti's life.

One week prior to surgery, Patti and her husband Kevin will travel to San Diego for pre-op testing and prep. Following the intricate procedure, Patti will remain at UCSD for 4 weeks to ensure she's stable enough to travel home to continue a recovery process that will take nearly a year.

This GoFundMe account has been created for Patti and her husband Kevin, as Kevin lost his job just before Christmas.

Although he will be by Patti's side to cheer her on, Kevin's 5-week stay in San Diego will come entirely out of their own pocket. And the ongoing medical expenses following surgery will be extraordinary.

Patti is treasured by her entire family, especially her grandbabies. This surgery will allow her to live not just years longer, it will also allow her to live with a better quality of life.

Our whole family loves Patti.

And Patti loves her family and friends. She also loves a good latte.

And barbecue.

But she hates spiders with a passion.

Patti was in the hospital when she learned she was finally going to be a grandma!

Patti now loves holding all the family babies.

And her lap is often full.

They're highly entertaining.

Sometimes they're a bit tiring.

Yet, nothing makes her happier than holding family babies.



And entertaining them.

Or just watching a Disney movie.

Even the announcement of Patti's fourth grandchild was a family affair.

And that lucky little guy inherited his grandma's bright blue eyes.

Patti and Kevin are now loved by four grandbabies.
