URGENT
Life has been a dramatic change for everyone in this year 2020, and especially for Patti, who has gone through a major life transition and encountered a particular type of cancer that has been a huge challenge to deal with. As many of you know, Patti & Rajah moved Oru into an assisted living place here in Santa Fe, after a couple decades of his Parkinson’s decline. She was his primary care taker, and after he moved out, Patti was working to empty the house and hopefully downsize.
In a strange turn of events when one of her best friends Mikki was visiting town, Patti was admitted to the hospital with obstructive jaundice, which revealed her cancer of the Bile Duct, or Cholangiocarcinoma. We soon learned that this is an extremely rare and challenging cancer that has numerous hurdles to overcome at each step, like many cancers. As of recently, we have been informed that it is Stage 4, and a cure as well as surgery are both off the table. That being said, there are still some potential options for other system therapies such as variants on Chemo or Immunotherapy.
Rajah moved back to Santa Fe in March, while working remotely, and has become Patti’s primary caretaker. At this point in time, we are still navigating our way through the various tests, processes, etc. that are required to advance the treatment. This has revealed many costs, including medicine, gas, many ER visits, and potentially a trip to MD Anderson, a cancer center in Texas that could achieve some of the things that UNM Cancer Center here in New Mexico has not. Additionally, now that she is not in “critical condition,” the nurse visits allowed by Medicare are limited to once a week, which is not sufficient considering Rajah has no medical experience and Patti has two drains with dressings on her side, as well as two different “picc lines” that help deliver chemo or antibiotics straight to her heart. Needless to say, a single nurse visit per week is a little risky, and not enough. In Covid times, everything has become delayed and in greater demand, which is a final economic stress on the whole situation.
We know that Patti is surrounded by so many incredible friends and family, both life-long and recent, who are eager to help and who have loved Patti for a long time. We are starting this GoFundMe page as a request for help and offering a means to those of our friends who have wanted to help, but did not have the proximity/access/chance to do so. We thank you so much, from the bottom of our hearts, and we love you: the family that surrounds Patti and has already been such a massive support in this storm thus far. Thank you.
