Path to Safety: A Fundraiser for My Family in Gaza
Hello, I am Aziz Abuaskar, a Palestinian pharmacist originally from Gaza, now residing in Belgium for the past five years. Currently, I am deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of my immediate family members who remain in Gaza, including my father, mother, brother, brother's wife, and their four children.
The decision to initiate this fundraiser to evacuate my family from the war-torn region of Gaza has not been an easy one. It pains us to contemplate leaving behind our homes, cherished memories, and loved ones. Yet, as the situation continues to deteriorate, the safety and survival of my family become increasingly uncertain. They face not only the immediate dangers of war, but also they struggle to even get a meal to eat or a bottle of water to drink. Living in a tent that doesn’t protect them from cold or rain and barely provides a bit of privacy in an enormously crowded refugee camp, not to mention the spread of diseases in these crowded areas.
Tragically, the onset of this war has already inflicted irreparable losses upon my family. We mourn the passing of our beloved sister, Shaimaa, her two lovely daughters, Sham (7 years old) and Noura (3 years old), as well as my brother-in-law and his family. 6 November 2023, forever mark the darkest day in our family's history. While I had the opportunity to cry about her and to mourn her, my family didn’t, as they were forced to flee our home in the north of Gaza the day after, escaping unimaginable horrors.

Here are their beautiful faces, know them, remember them.

My family now resides in Rafah after fleeing from one place to another searching for a safe refuge awaiting what would the days will unleash, knowing that our home has now turned into rubble, the place where we lived for 3 decades, where every memory is framed.
My father, Abdalhalim, is a resilient and compassionate individual. He’s a cancer survivor and diabetes patient, He bravely masks his concerns for the family, striving to maintain a sense of optimism amidst adversity. However, we’re actually aware of his worries about the family and his grief about our losses, and god knows if he has taken any medication for his diabetes the last 4 months.
My mother, Salwa, bears the weight of multiple losses, she doesn’t know what to mourn anymore, the loss of her daughter and her two grandchildren, the loss of her mother due to heart attack as result of lack of medication and health care two months ago, the loss of her father and her two aunts in an airstrike a month ago or the loss of her home that she painstakingly built with a lot of hardship and love.
My brother, Ehab, in order to provide for his family had to work as a chef in Jaffa, and due to the very harsh transportation between Gaza and the rest of Palestine he didn’t get to see his family only once a month, and when the war started he was in Jaffa, where he was in danger to be imprisoned by IDF only because he’s a Gazan like thousands of others. Thankfully he was able to flee to the west bank where he now resides with at my uncle’s, and for five months he didn’t get to see his wife and his four children, separated in the most difficult circumstances when they need him the most.
My brother, Mohammad, is a last year graduate civil engineer. We should have been celebrating his graduation now, and he should have been looking to start his career building in our beautiful city. Now his university has been flattened to the ground, his five difficult years of study has now gone, his dreams have been shattered.
My four nephews, Salwa, Maisaa, Leen and Mohammad, have already seen so much horror and destruction than any human being should have. They deserve to enjoy their childhood, go to school and play like any other child around this world.

This fundraiser has two purposes, the first is to tell the story of my family and let it be known among 2 million other stories. Our second goal is to collect the crossing fees at the Egypt-Gaza border which will be a sum of $30,000, as the current crossing fee is $5,000 per adult and $2,500 per child. Please consider donating to this crucial cause and sharing this campaign with your network. Every share and donation bring us one step closer to bringing my family to safety and giving them the chance to rebuild their lives.
Most importantly please don’t get used to see our people in Gaza starved and killed, keep them in your thoughts talk about them.

Thank you for your compassion and solidarity.

Warm regards,
Aziz Abuaskar
