The morning of December 15, 2018, Patrick (aka Dad) suffered a stroke that significantly affected his left frontal lobe, leaving him unable to speak and paralyzed on his right side. He transferred from the hospital to the Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center, one of the best stroke and brain injury rehab centers in northern California. We're very thankful that his Kaiser insurance will cover his rehab both in the hospital and at home, but when he is discharged his insurance will not cover in-home attendant care.
We are asking our friends and family for assistance in ensuring Dad has the proper care and is safe once he is discharged. His girlfriend, Mona, has generously offered her home for him to stay in, but she will be going back to work full time around the time he will be discharged. Dad's in-home recovery process will require someone to be with him 24 hours a day 7 days a week until he can communicate his needs verbally and he gains more balance and safe mobility. Verbal communication is a higher brain function, and typically the last function to return after a stroke such as his.
Our funding goal is based on an estimate for an in-home care attendant while Mona works as well as respite care for Mona. He will continue to receive in-home rehab therapies and eventually move to outpatient rehab as he continues to improve.
