Passion Project: Haiti
Over the years, we have supported the children at Mounia's orphanage in Bon Repos, Haiti in small ways and in sporadic intervals. We are excited to announce that our current goal is to ramp up efforts by ensuring that the children receive proper nutrition. On a day to day basis, they consume food not supplemented by nutrients that they need to grow. Often, they are having only rice and pasta day after day after day.
Beginning Friday September 13th, we are going to have meat, vegetables, and fruit delivered. At any given time, there may be 20-25 children living there with 3-4 adult caretakers. The first shipment will cost a total of $200, which includes salary for personnel in addition to a variety of food such as chicken, eggs, mangoes, watermelon, spinach, and yucca.
Recognizing that $100 probably made you snort, know that we live in a different community where Seamless and Door Dash deliver yummy eats. Food shopping in Haiti is a full day affair (as Nina has personally experienced in Haiti) with an early start, throwing elbows in a crowded market, negotiating costs, and traveling from one market to another to get everything you need.
Aside from improving their nutrition, being able to eat something much tastier than what they are used to will bring the children much joy. Most of us are lucky enough to be able to choose what we eat as many times a day as we'd like. We are privileged enough to go to Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts and spend $5 on coffee; buy $8 salads; spend $20 on sushi. Being able to give the gift of good food to another is the greatest privilege of all.
