Parrot, Duck & Goose Rescue Net Gun

Donation protected
Every year the volunteers of Burge Bird Rescue and the Kansas City Duck Rescue Team have saved the lives of dozens of abandoned domestic ducks, injured geese, and escaped parrots.  Some are easy to catch because they are either quite tame, seriously injured, or in a location that makes them easy to trap.  However, every year we go out on multiple rescue trips that end in failure because despite our nets, fences, and boats, the birds elude capture.  Most of these birds will die without our help.

(Photo: This is "Torpedo Duck", who managed to avoid capture three times despite our best efforts with boats and nets.  She had to be euthanized after she was attacked by a dog at the lake where she had been dumped.)

A few years ago we tried buying an inexpensive net launching kit, but returned it after it failed to work if there was even the slightest breeze.  With Easter coming up, we know that it is the time of year when lots of people will buy baby ducks for their kids and then turn them loose a few weeks later to die, because domestic ducks can't survive in the wild.  Canada Geese will be wandering away from ponds to find nesting sites, and be more vulnerable to getting hit by cars.  Parrot owners will take their birds outside and lose them when the birds are startled and fly away.  These birds are counting on us!

(Photo: This duck survived an attack by some predator that carried off one of her siblings, but required 16 stiches in her head and neck.  A grandmother bought three baby ducks for the grandkids, and was told (incorrectly) by the feed store that they could be turned loose to fly away once they got too big and messy.  These pet ducks cannot fly.  We were lucky to be able to lure the two survivors into an area where we trapped them, and they went to live in a safe place with other ducks and no predators.)

We want to buy a much better net launcher to try to catch these birds in need.  The KC Duck Rescue Team has no funds, and Burge Bird Rescue has enough money to care for the birds in the adoption program and sanctuary, but none to spare for this expenditure.  You can see the device we want to buy at  Super Talon Ultra Animal Catcher Kit Avian , along with a video on how it was used to catch a goose with an arrow stuck in him, and with videos of capturing other animals.  The cost is $1765 plus $28 for shipping.  This launcher can be used over and over for years to save dozens of birds!

(Photo: "Arrow Duck" was well known in Kansas City, and was seen on several TV stations, as he chose to occupy several bodies of water in the populated parts of the city.  Because he could fly even with an arrow in his neck, we were not able to catch him, and do not know what happened to him after our multiple attempts to rescue him failed.)

Can you help us save more animals?  This net launching gun will enable use to rescue some of these birds that we would otherwise not be able to save.  If 359 people each donated $5 we would be able to buy it right away!

As of 3/13 we have reached our goal of $1793 to buy the net launching kit.  However, if any other donors wish to help our rescue team, we could really use more hand-held nets (big fishing nets) for our team members.  We only have 4 nets shared among 20 people, so people keep having to drive out of their way to borrow one.  If we could supply our most frequent volunteers with one or two nets each, it would be faster and easier to deploy when we get a call.
