Parnavi's Fundraiser to Save the Choco Rainforest
Tax deductible
I am a 6th grader raising money to save the unique and priceless Choco Rainforest in South America. It is our last chance to save this Biodiversity Hotspot as only 2% of the Ecuadorian Choco rainforest is left. Sadly, 98% of the pristine habitat of the Ecuadorian Choco has been deforested mostly for palm oil plantations and continues to be logged at an alarming rate.
I thank you in advance for your donation. Every little bit helps and will mean so much to me. Our contributions will go towards the purchase of a 57,000 acre piece of untouched rainforest that Jocotoco foundation is trying to buy from a logging company for 5 million dollars. They have raised more than 3 million but they need our support. So I am asking for your support as this rainforest is a treasure for all of us. I have witnessed it’s gems - its biodiversity many of which is found nowhere else on earth and much is still waiting to be discovered.
This new purchase will connect several other reserves and create a rainforest larger than Yosemite National Park. This contiguous forest will be able to support many endemic and endangered animals and top predators like Jaguar and Harpy Eagle which need a large range to survive in and which are important in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.
Please support Jocotoco Foundation which was founded in 1998. It is a trustworthy non-governmental organization (large non-profit ) that buys land to preserve and already manages 15 reserves in Ecuador thus protecting the habitats of thousands of species. These reserves also help provide local employment and are good for business. Jocotoco has many international partners from the US, Canada and Europe.
The World Wildlife Fund has identified Choco Rainforest as one in most urgent need of conservation.
E.O. Wilson, a well known biologist from Harvard University has said, "I cannot imagine a more urgent conservation initiative. The Chocó plants and vertebrates are awe-inspiring in richness and heart-breaking in their endangerment. I applaud Jocotoco for its ambitious effort and wish them every success”.
I feel saddened to see this biodiversity go extinct one by one. We must do whatever we can to save these invaluable gifts of nature. I feel it would truly be the greatest loss to humanity if we can't save the last remaining bit of Choco.
My family and I have traveled to the Canande reserve in the Choco Rainforest in Ecuador managed by the Jocotoco Foundation. Thanks to our guide Jose from Tropical Herping, we got to explore and enjoy the lush rainforest and see many unique, rare and endemic species. Jose told us about the many new species of frogs and snakes they had recently discovered there.
I have learnt that the Choco Rainforest, a lowland rainforest on the pacific side of the Andes, stretching from northwest Ecuador to southern Panama and is one the most biologically diverse regions in the world. It is only about the size of Virginia but is home to about half as many plant and vertebrate species as inhabit the whole of the U.S.
I look forward to feeling relieved when the remaining Choco Rainforest in Ecuador is saved forever for the living species they are home to and for humans to enjoy and wonder. Even a little bit of our donation will make an impact. Please give any amount.
Your donation is tax-deductible in the U.S.
