Parmilla on Glaciers!
Dear friends, family, and community supporters,
Hello! My name is Parmilla Dhimal. I was born in Nepal and am currently a Sophomore enrolled in Corcoran High School in Syracuse, NY. I am excited to share that I was selected as one of eight girls in the entire world to climb glaciers in Washington this summer through the Inspiring Girls Expeditions program!
The Inspiring Girls Cascades on Ice program is designed for girls ages sixteen - seventeen and it provides extreme trips and adventures to girls so they can explore and learn about glaciers and the alpine environment, in addition to developing their leadership skills. It is limited to eight girls from across the world, making it very competitive. The application process involved writing eleven separate essays, submitting letters of recommendation from two teachers, and writing about my ability to withstand certain challenges. This summer, I will travel to Washington state where I will climb glaciers, summit 10,781 ft tall Mt. Baker, camp outside, explore glacier life, and conduct fun science experiments with girls from all over the world.
As a child growing up in Nepal, I grew up hearing stories about Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who was one of the first two individuals known to reach the summit of Mount Everest. His legacy encouraged me to envision myself as one of the Everest climbers. Growing up, I envisioned myself reaching many goals -- whether that was summiting a mountain, earning high honor roll, or one day becoming a physician. Inspiring Girls is giving me a once in a lifetime opportunity to fulfill my passion and learn not only about what I am capable of, but also about my peers, and the environment that holds us.
The program is of no cost to me! Inspiring Girls Expeditions is paying for all of the costs associated with the expedition except for my airfare. As part of the program, I need to fundraise to cover the cost of my plane tickets to and from Seattle WA. If you or your organization are able to contribute to my fundraiser, share the word about my upcoming trip, or help in any other way, please let me know!
