Many of you know that Parker, my nephew, has struggled with nose bleeds for several years. In September of this year, they became more chronic and severe in their level of pain and loss of blood. Parker's nose bleeds were no longer just happening during track and cross country practices/meets, but they were happening at all hours of the day and with no warning. His bleeding would last 45-60 minutes at a time and anywhere from 8-10 times a day. The amount of blood loss ultimately started to wear on him and he became chronically lethargic.
He started seeing a wonderful ENT who was treating him multiple times a week, at night, on weekends, you name it, he was trying to help Parker to stop bleeding. Through several attempts at packing his nose, several medications, dozens of cauterizations, rhino rockets, and ultimately several surgeries.....we were all at a loss. He just couldn't quit bleeding.
Troy and Katie were then at a point where they were given the option for him to have his main artery going into his nose embolized via angioplasty. The risks were high regarding the possible side effects (permanent lockjaw, blindness, etc) but they still decided to do the surgery....and no luck, that didn't even stop the bleeding.
Aside from the surgeries, he's had multiple trips to the ER, met with other ENTs, and hematologists, had 100s of labs done, scans, etc. He also has started having large rashes that come and go. He has been vomiting/nauseated for months and has overall pain. And through it all, he still keeps on smiling.
Katie and Troy finally got some answers a few weeks ago when he was diagnosed with Wegeners Disease (GPA), an incredibly rare blood vessel disorder. They immediately contacted the Mayo Clinic after several suggestions from doctors that Mayo was the place to be....and they got back to them within 24 hours. They are off to Mayo next week, so fingers crossed that Parker can start a treatment plan ASAP.
Since so many of you have asked how you can help Parker...I set up this page. While prayer is the only thing Katie and Troy are asking for, I would also like to help facilitate flights, hotels, meals, etc as they have already accumulated several medical expenses.
