PARADISE (TEMPORARILY) LOST
Thanksgiving is upon us, with Christmas not far behind. At first blush, it is difficult for Kayla, Braelynn and me (Sean Sheppard) to see our blessings. We lost our residence, I lost my livelihood (Manager of Ridge Transmission Shop, my family-owned business), we lost Braelynn’s school (Pee Wee Pre-School), and our September 21, 2019 wedding venue (The Roethler’s Ranch) all to the Paradise, CA fire. But…..
There is always, always something to be grateful for. We will find housing, gameful employment and household needs. Wedding dates can be adjusted (the fire was unable to destroy our love and commitment, so if necessary, we can change a date).
All of us who’ve lost all material touches give thanks for the fire sparing our loved ones; it’s noble and necessary to say “at least we have each other.” The reality still persists, though, that we really do have to dwell on what to do next, what to buy first, where to find resources. We do need outside help. We need to replace things that can be replaced. We need time to cry over photographs and mementos lost, but we must move forward. We’re young and able and, with hope and help, we can look for many more days to give Thanks.
