Geneva Aguirre, my grandmother, just recently celebrated her 101st birthday. A fiercely independent woman, she was still able to live on her own and took great care of her home. She had lived in her home in Paradise, California for the last three decades. Everyone is always amazed to hear how long of a life she has lived, and I always say her endless projects around her home and her garden keeps her young and active. Her home was always a special place to visit, full of old family heirlooms, interesting antiques, and even a pool table older than I am that she kept instead of a dinning room, "So that people could come over an enjoy themselves". We've had family traditions of cracking walnuts from her walnut trees, painting stepping stones in her garden for every visit or major family event, and even hunting black widow spiders outside the property at night!
But then last week, just two weeks after her 101st birthday, the Camp Fire started in her hometown of Paradise. With barely time to get out, Geneva's neighbors were thankfully able to get her with nothing but the clothes on her back and make it to safety. Sadly though, she lost her home. It's been absolutely devastating and difficult to figure out where to pick up the pieces and start over. She is currently with her sons, Ed and Cliff, as they help to get her back on track, but it is putting somewhat of a financial strain on everyone.
Many of our family and friends have been asking what they can do to help. We've realized what she is in most need of right now is all of the necessities (ex: clothing, bedding, kitchen items such as dishes and utensils, furniture, etc) to get herself back on her feet. She has lost everything and is now starting her life over from scratch at 101 years old. Any little bit you'd like to give helps. We'll use the money to help get her through the next few months, and get back some of the things she needs day to day, until she is able to settle into a new home and make it her own again.
