Thuy Do - Athlete Biography
Thuy was born and raised in Ottawa and has lived here her whole life. At the age of fifteen,
Thuy required brain surgery for a condition called Arteriovenous Malformations. On the table
she had massive stroke due to complications. The stroke caused paralysis, and doctors
didn’t know if she could walk or even talk again. However, with a lot of physio and
rehabilitation and even more determination, Thuy regained all those capacities and adapted.
Thuy will always struggle with hemiparesis on her right side, and battles depression which
is likely a consequence of the ways her brain was injured by the stroke.
Thuy is unable to ride a regular bicycle, so almost a decade ago her family purchased her a
Catrike recumbent trike. She fell in love with the Catrike, riding so much that it became her
main source of transportation. Most months of the year – sun, rain, heat, cold – Thuy can be
found riding the streets of Ottawa doing her errands, the errands of others, and just plain
cycling! This has become an essential part of her emotional and physical health. The trike
helps to strengthen her core, improve her mood, boost her spirits and expand her social
network. This social network has allowed her to more fully recover her speech, and she is
known and loved for her radiant smile and ready laugh. Thuy says “biking is breathing for
me”.
Cycling is freedom, and it is motivation to do something more. So in 2019, she wanted to see
what options there were in the world of para-cycling. This is a new chapter. A year ago, Thuy
took on the road trike and started training in an entirely different way, biking long hours with
a training regimen. In recent camps in Bromont and North Bay, she improved her hill
climbing and cornering. She is up to the challenge!
