Panthers Go to College is an after-school program offered to our top high school scholars. Starting in the 9th grade, these students spend their time researching careers and colleges, preparing for entrance exams, and participating in extracurricular activities like Debate and Science Olympiad. Their hard work and dedication is rewarded by an end-of-year trip to visit universities out of the area.
The overall purpose of our program is two-fold: first to give our students the competitive edge that they need to be accepted into the top universities; secondly to increase the college-knowledge of our students, most of whom are first generation and don't have the access to college culture and experiences from their family. The university trips help our students visualize themselves living on a college campus, identify what to look for in a university program, and figure out what kind of experience they want for themselves. This set of knowledge is often overlooked as being essential to getting into college, but are actually vital steps in ensuring that our students have a positive experience once they get to college, and are set up for success through college.
This year, our students are in the 11th grade and have decided to visit Washington, D.C. to explore the top four universities in the city, including our first Historically Black College, Howard University. We've been working up towards this trip over the past 3 years, and will be a once-in--lifetime opportunity for our students. The plane tickets are $500 each, plus room, board, and transportation around the city. Students have been raising funds by selling chocolate and snacks at basketball games, but that's not going to be enough. They need real financial support in order to make this dream trip a reality. Please consider donating whatever you can! If you have a particular student in mind that you are trying to support, please contact me separately, and I will make sure the funds go directly to them.
Thank you so much for reading about our program, and I hope you consider donating towards our college trip!
