Panoply is a short narrative film based on the novella Beneath the Remains by Terence Hannum, in which teen metalhead Gabby searches in the humid Maryland summer for her missing sister. Taking a break, she pedals to her friend Lisa’s house. Lisa is busy with chores, but her older sister Jessica invites Gabby in to drink a beer and wait for Lisa to finish. She offers to shave one side of Gabby’s head and Gabby hesitantly agrees.
The film explores relationships among young women, emerging identity, anxiety and isolation. It centers complex female characters and showcases women from the metal subculture who are rarely given a voice in film.
The film will be shot in June 2019 by a local crew comprised of mainly women filmmakers, including director Dina Fiasconaro. We were lucky enough to receive a small Maryland State Arts Council "Creativity Grant" for production, but it is unfortunately not enough to cover all of our costs which include: paying and feeding actors and crew, location and insurance fees, props and wardrobe, transportation and completing the film professionally with an audio mix and color correction.
Your donation will assist us in producing the film from start to finish, so that we can submit it to film festivals and online distribution platforms. You will also be contributing to the sustainability of the Baltimore film community by creating production jobs, and supporting women filmmakers and female-centric stories, which have historically been marginalized and overlooked in media.
