Pandemic Relief for Girls School in India

Donation protected
You can change the lives of young girls from low income families by helping educate them.

Our family-owned school in a village near Chandigarh, India needs your help to survive the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic.

Since 2005, Laxmi Tara Rathour Public Smart School has been educating children from low-income families;  the parents are servants and laborers in nearby villages.  Currently, 1,400 K-12 children (65% girls, 35% boys) attend the school.  Nearly all the families have lost income due to Covid and are struggling to pay tuition for their children.

We employ battered women from broken homes as cleaning staff.  Employment at the school gives them income and stability to sustain their families.

For over 15 years, the school has been largely self-sustaining through fees paid by the students’ families.  The school continues educating the children, but fees from families are near-zero and the school has depleted savings recently used to continue paying the teachers and staff.

Please consider donating at one of these levels:
- $1,000 : educate 40 girls for a month
-     $150  : educate one girl for 6 months
-     $100  : educate four girls for a month
-        $25  :  educate one girl for a month

Please help  keep the school alive with your donation to help sustain operations through the end of 2020.

In 2001, our mother passed away unexpectedly and our father made a huge decision – he retired as a General from the Indian Army and invested his entire life savings in starting a school for girls.  His investment paid for the land, building, buses, and all start-up expenses.  The school operates debt-free.

He named the school in our mother’s honor and chartered it to reflect her motto: "If you educate a girl, you educate a nation".   The school is focused on educating young girls.  The situation for girls in India is precarious.  Many poor families consider girls a burden and marry them off by the age of 16; education is not a priority.  Through schooling, we change the trajectory of these girls' lives.

The funds will be used to cover the monthly tuition for 400 girls spanning 6 months of the pandemic.  Full tuition for a child is roughly $25 per month.  Achieving our $60,000 target would be equivalent to $10,000/month.

All funds raised would go directly to school salaries and fixed expenses:
- $6,500: Salary for 50 teachers @ $130/teacher/month
- $3,200: Salary for 30 of 40 support staff @ $80/person/month
- $300: Monthly school maintenance and supplies

Reaching our goal of $60,000 will sustain the school until the anticipated pandemic recovery in early 2021.

Your support will go a long way. We would ask you to consider a donation in any amount. Thank you so much for truly helping to change the lives of these young girls.

*Note: While the school is a government certified non-profit in India, your US-based donation through Go Fund Me page is not tax-deductible.
