Pancreatic Cancer Research Campaign

It’s no secret to our friends and family that Mike and I share in our love for being active and healthy. We work together to schedule our time outdoors and/or exercising around park days and nights out with friends. When we first started dating, he was training for his very first half marathon as part of a company fundraiser. But really, he was more of a weight lifting kind of guy. We both ran that half marathon, and he said that would probably be the most time he ever put in to an endurance sport. I didn’t care, nor did I ever push for him to join me in more. It just so happened that throughout the years to come, we started to cherish our long morning runs together.

2017 has been a year filled with so much joy and adventure for us. Mike started an exciting new job taking him to Europe for 3 months, I became a nurse, we got engaged, and we explored new parts of the world together.

It’s hard to believe that all of this fun and excitement came on the heels of such a difficult ending to 2016, when Mike lost his dad, Jim, to a sudden battle against pancreatic cancer. Jim was an outdoors kind of guy himself and loved hearing about the new endeavors Mike was jumping into. We hate that we haven’t been able to share all of our news and stories from this year with him.

I got the feeling that Jim thought it was funny that Mike had started taking up all of this endurance training, considering he had to force Mike to participate in Track & Field in middle school – a battle which was ultimately won by Mike. But, he was always so interested and excited to hear about the next race on the calendar.

We started talking about training for an Ironman together back in July or August of 2016. We began incorporating cycling and swimming into our workout routine “just to get a feel” for it. Of course, I knew the adventure ahead all too well, and would be so excited to share it with Mike, but I didn’t want to push him into making that big decision.

During one of our visits with Jim, I remember hearing Mike share that we were thinking about doing an Ironman, and it was at that moment that I knew we were committed. Jim lost his battle a few short weeks later on October 11, casting a pretty dark cloud over the end of 2016 for the whole family.

As 2017 neared, Mike and I shared a couple drinks and recapped with each other all that had happened in the months prior. We decided together that we were going to make 2017 mean something special, and to us, that meant completing an Ironman in memory of Jim, raising money for Pancreatic Cancer research along the way.

Believe it or not, in the midst of the past few months’ adventures, we have been chipping away at long swims, bike rides and runs. We are building up our mileage week-by-week and are really getting into the thick of training. As we focus our Summer months on training, we would like to invite our friends and family to join us in our adventure. When we step up to the starting line at Ironman Chattanooga on September 24, we would love to have not only had your encouragement in our physical journey, but to have had your help in raising funds to be donated to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

100% of donations will be directly submitted to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation the day after our race in honor of Jim Trihy .

Thank you all for your love and support!
