Today we share the story of our wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend Pam a\k\a Pammy Jo Halsey. It was the year 2000, Pam lost 25 lbs. in one month and lost so much vision her eye doctor wanted to hospitalize her. Her body was constantly in pain and extreme exhaustion, but the doctors had a difficult time diagnosing her problem,
Finally in 2014, a chiropractic doctor that had an inkling something more hidden was wrong… requested x-rays. The x-rays showed thousands of holes all over in her bones, even on her skull, and the diagnosis was Light Chain Multiple Myeloma. She was given 3 months to live. By the grace of God, she is still with us today, 6-1/2 years later. Pam immediately started an intense treatment of 2 kinds of chemo and steroids every week….nonstop for the last 6-1/2 years. Pam has also had numerous blood tests every week, bone scans, MRIs, multiple hospitalizations, many trips to emergency room by ambulance, many bone and life threatening surgeries, and blood transfusions. She also had to have her teeth extracted, along with target pain shots to control pain and the list goes on and on. It takes a huge team of doctors to be on her team.
In addition, Pam has a different DNA that has caused severe allergies to the opioid line of drugs which makes it a challenge for doctors to even know how to treat her pain. Pam is in the top 20% of people who have this rare type of myeloma. She also has not lost her hair therefore when people read this and not believe there is an invisible disease that hides within her body and lets her look the same.
Pam and Dane have been blessed with 4 children, Tara (Brett) Oestreich, Kyle (Ashley) Halsey, Eric (Kathi) Halsey, and Amber (Jared) Wragge and 11 grandchildren. Dane took early retirement to care for and be by her side. This early retirement was a blessing but has been severely depleted as it has been used to pay the out of pocket expenses needed with trips to Omaha and for the treatments that insurance doesn’t cover which are thousands of dollars. This couple is not yet 65 years old so they continue to pay their own health insurance. Millions of dollars have been spent on these chemo treatments to hopefully keep the cancer at bay but each regimen leads to another unsuccessful attempt.
Their children have wanted to do a fund raiser and now in the year of 2020, it is unsafe to hold an event and therefore have decided to post this “Go Fund Me” account in her name.
During this time of Christmas, please keep Pam in your prayers and consider a gift of a donation to help with her continued trips to Omaha and this next treatment and many more. Thank you for reading and sharing Pam’s story and for considering a donation to her cause.
God’s Blessings to you.
