TRANSFORMING YOUTH THROUGH DANCE TRAINING

Donation protected
Dance inspires, transforms, and heals.  Dance improves academic success and gives voice where words may fail us.  As we move out of social isolation and distance learning we need this healing power more than ever,  for our youth, and for our whole community!

Palm Springs Dance Project  is once again gearing up to again bring dance training to Coachella Valley students, build up our local dance studios and community, and showcase fabulous Los Angeles dancers in a gala show!  While entertainment venues have been dark, we have been busy behind the scenes, improving our program, reaching out to more studios and dance supporters, and preparing to relaunch the Palm Springs Dance Project  this summer.   And, with a $5,000.00 challenge grant from the Western Wind Foundation, we are looking to raise a total of 12,500.00!  We are asking you to join us.

Help Isolated Student Dancers Return to their Passion

The COVID pandemic has forced many students to withdraw from their dance instruction due to limited availability and even more limited family resources.  Many dance students work out their feelings through dance.  Even before COVID-19, our area suffered from high poverty rates and many local families lived with food and housing insecurities.  Since COVID, many students are experiencing fear, hopelessness, and depression.  Now, as restrictions lift, we can let the healing begin.

A Local Student's Story

Harmony, a dance student from Palm Springs has not attended dance class for a year and, as opportunities opened, her family cannot afford classes.  For Harmony, dance has been her lifeline, there for her in sad and dark times.  During COVID her world of expression has shrunk to the size of her bedroom.  A dancer from the age of two, Harmony says "I don't have words to express how I feel, and without dance I do not have a way to deal with my feelings."  You can help Harmony, and others like her, return to dance and constructively deal with stress and anxiety, warding off the negative impacts of depression.

Dance Transforms

Dance improves mental, physical, and psychological health, and promotes academic achievement - opening the door to self-discovery and becoming a productive citizen.  Several long-standing independent dance studios in Palm Springs have trained, groomed, and launched students into college programs and professional dance companies all over the United States, such as Alvin Ailey, Boston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet.  This has been accomplished through the commitment and diligence of these community dance studios.  Our work will ensure that our local dance studios and school dance programs will remain with-in reach to youth of all cultural backgrounds.

Bring Our Dance Community Back, Better Than Ever

Our small independent studios have suffered prolonged closures and restrictions during COVID.  Dancers work, learn and rehearse in small studios:  it is a tight space and tactile environment.  These environments require complex protocols to ensure safety for all, including reduced enrollment.  Only decades long commitment, creativity and fortitude have allowed some of these studios to reopen with safety protocols, and there is a shortage of classes.  A local instructor states "With these extra costs due to Covid-19 coupled with the reduced income, it's really tough to recover.  I had to reach deep into my personal savings just to stay open."  With our GoFundMe matching grant campaign, you can help these important studios re-open and return to offering pre-COVID levels of training.

Palm Springs Dance Project makes Dance Happen

For the past four years the Palm Springs Dance Project   has created engaging dance education, performance, and community programming for the Palm Springs community, with acclaimed choreographers and dancers from around the world and from our own backyard.  We have provided scholarships to underserved students and engaged them in professional dance training and performance opportunities on the stage and in the community!  We were the last pre-COVID performance at the Annenberg Theater in March 2020, and we're eager to bring our dance programs back to students, the community, and you!

From Lemons we make Lemonade

We're inviting you to join the Palm Springs Dance Project   so that we can quickly bring back dance instruction and performance for our aspiring dancers!  For only $500.00, for instance, we can bring a master trainer into our schools, giving 20 or more dance teachers wonderful tools to improve the effectiveness of their training and enhance the experience of hundreds of students.  Or, for $1,500.00, we can place 4 students into 3 full months of dance training in the studio, including dance gear!

There is so much we can do when many join together to make a difference. The Western Wind Foundation will be matching gifts up to the first $5,000.00 received, if you give by June 15, 2021.  Please give today and double the value of your contribution!
