My name is Karl Frey, I am a junior doctor working in Oxford. During my medical school, I formed part of OxPal, an educational outreach program that gave Medical Students from Jenin, Palestine, the opportunity to travel to the UK and partake in a summer medical school at Oxford University.
Through this experience I befriended a student who I have remained in touch for the last 2 years. He would like to remain unnamed for the purpose of this charitable cause. He would be delighted to have the opportunity to return to the UK for his medical elective, which has organised in Leicester General Hospital.
For this to be possible, he would need funds for visa, flights, accommodation and living expenses. I have included a bio below to explain how much this would mean to my friend:
I am a fifth-year medical student from Jenin, Palestine. My objective is to become an international physician equipped to effect meaningful change within the healthcare system of Palestine, particularly in my hometown of Jenin. Due to the challenges facing me and my community, To achieve this goal, I am seeking your support.
During my fourth year of medical school at the Jenin Governmental Hospital, I witnessed several issues our healthcare system has to deal with. The hospital is often filled to capacity with a large number of patients, stretching our few resources to the breaking point. More often than not, I would arrive at the hospital to find that we had exhausted our basic supplies or that we had to turn patients away due to a lack of space.
Furthermore, there were days when I was unable to reach the hospital due to various difficulties, and I was frustrated seeing my people struggle to gain access to medical care. Financial obstacles compounded these challenges, as numerous families were unable to afford even basic medical care.
Despite all of these difficulties, I have been presented with a great opportunity: an six-week elective placement in the UK. This experience is not just a chance for me to learn; it's a stepping stone on the path to realizing my dream of becoming an international doctor.
The potential benefit of this elective is invaluable. It will allow me to be exposed to innovative medical practice and innovative healthcare solutions that I will be able to bring back to Palestine. I will have the chance to learn from experienced practitioners in a well-resourced environment, with exposure to patient care, hospital management, and medical research. This knowledge is crucial in addressing the systemic issues we have in Jenin and beyond.
However, this chance comes with a significant financial burden. The costs of travel, accommodation, and living expenses while in the UK are beyond my current financial resources. This is where your assistance can make a difference.
By supporting my GoFundMe campaign, you are not just sponsoring me to attend an elective; you are contributing to the healthcare future of Palestine. Your donation will enable me to gain beneficial skills and experiences that I will bring back home and utilize to empower me to contribute to the rebuilding and development of our healthcare system.
Thank you for considering supporting my aspirations. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of many.
