Pākōlea Support Services BLAST OFF

In August 2020, a long-time behavior analysis service provider announced its intended discontinuation of client services on the island of Kauaʻi. Due to its rural location, services for children with autism and other disabilities in the community are already limited, with providers having long wait lists.

Doing business on Kauaʻi provides a unique set of challenges.  In late August, four women met to discuss those challenges and bring together ideas on how to creatively solve those problems and Pākōlea Support Services  was born.  (Feel free to click on the link and explore our website.)  From the beginning the ideas of meeting community need while providing for employee wellbeing were the foundation; seeking a place where these might meet to the benefit of all.  We set goals like living wages, paid time off, and bridging gaps between what health insurance covers and what families on Kauai really need in order to access services.

Pākōlea Support Services will provide ABA services to assist children and their families through interventions designed to increase communication and language skills, decrease challenging behaviors, improve social skills, and build independence with life skills (grooming, dressing, shopping, cooking).  Plans for future services include adding speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, adult and vocational services, family support groups, and inclusive leisure opportunities.

As we embark upon the journey of founding a non-profit corporation, with our 501(c)(3) status pending, we humbly request your help in setting us off in the right direction.  While we are pursuing small business loans, line of credit, and will, in the future, have many fundraising opportunities, we have found ourselves in limbo with the need to begin expending money prior to having an established cash flow.  Every gift through this platform will reduce the financial debt burden to our new business, giving us firmer foundations as we move forward.

Our current needs include paying rent and operating expenses for the first 2-3 months of operation until we receive reimbursement for services rendered during that initial period.  If you have questions, or would like to review our business plan prior to making a gift, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.  You can find our support email address on our website.
