Please help our friend Melisa in the Paint Fork Community!
On the afternoon of April 19, 2019, a once in a century flash flood occurred in the Paint Fork Community of Barnardsville, NC. Over the course of four hours approximately 4.5 inches of rain fell. The local streams overflowed and roads were closed.
Around 2:51 pm on the 19th, Melisa and her dad arrived to their driveway and the water was near the top of the bridge of thier drive. At 2:57, the pavement started to bubble up and a fountain of water shot out of the bridge lifting a huge boulder that was lying on the edge and tossing it into the water. Then, the pavement began to break away and huge holes began to form. Shortly thereafter the entire top of the driveway bridge, pavement, dirt and large rocks all washed out.
Within 10 minutes, the 20-foot section of culvert shot out from under the bridge and lodged against a footbridge 150 to 200 feet away in less than three seconds; It was like a bullet with all the force of the water behind it. With no emergency access, they had to get the bridge replaced fast. The two culverts quickly came to $1,500 apiece, and then the 100+ ton of stone and the crew & equipment to do the work was another $3,000.
Their homeowner's insurance does not cover the cost of this repair. No one was hurt and their homes are safe. The struggle lies in the cost of the replacement and her parents are older and on a fixed income.
We appreciate any help for our friend!
