Ontario Sick Day Relief Project

PAID SICK LEAVE FOR ONTARIO’S ESSENTIAL WORKERS

The current Ontario government has failed to protect essential workers and all Ontarians from COVID-19. The Ontario Sick Day Relief Project is an emergency fund to support essential workers through the COVID-19 crisis in Ontario. This fund does not replace the need for government policy to mandate paid sick days.

The Ontario Sick Day Relief Project is a grassroots, community-led initiative that provides money to essential workers to enable them to take time off work due to COVID-19. We manage a community crowdfunding project and application process to make sure funds find their way to essential workers in need.

This initiative was started by three women who are invested in the health of their communities, and want to help support their neighbours. We are not experts on paid sick day policy or workers rights, and are committed to amplifying the voices and work of organizations and individuals advocating for fair working conditions and rights.

How will essential workers get this money?

1. Individuals submit a request for funds through this Application Form.
2. The organizer withdraws the funds on a weekly basis if there are enough eligible applicants to receive the funds.
3. The organizer deposits the funds into their bank account and then immediately sends an e-transfer to the email address listed in the Application Form.

How much money are essential workers receiving from this fund?

When an individual submits the application form they will select the number of days that they were off sick. Pending available funds, they will receive $160 per day, up to 5 days (for a maximum total of $800).

The GoFundMe will be open until May 20, 2021. Any funds remaining after this period will be donated to a community organization that advocates for workers' rights.

How do you validate the person who submits a request?

The individual must specify their industry, name of employer to confirm they are an essential worker. Unfortunately as this initiative is community-run, outside the infrastructure of the Ontario Government, it is not possible to comprehensively validate each request.

We are working on a model of community trust and the understanding that anyone applying is in need of financial support. We are hopeful that people will respect the honour system and reserve this money for people who truly need it.

Why did we start this?

This initiative was started by three women who are invested in the health of their communities, and want to help support their neighbours. We are not experts on paid sick day policy or workers rights, and are committed to amplifying the voices and work of organizations and individuals advocating for fair working conditions and rights. The team is comprised of Jasmine Shaw (P. Eng.), Lindsay Clarke (RN), and Connie Cameron (RN).

What else can I do to support essential workers?
1. First and foremost, call your MPP and email your MPP  to demand legislated paid sick days.
2. Amplify and support the work of worker rights organizations, including Migrant Workers Alliance for Change, Fight for 15 and Fairness, Decent Work & Health Network, and Workers' Action Centre.
