On Jan 25th, my husband, Padraic Veach, succumbed to an 18 month battle with lung cancer with brain metastasis. During his fight, he underwent 4 brain surgeries, three rounds of radiation to his brain and radiation and chemotherapy for his lung. He had been unable to work during this time, between feeling unwell and having daily doctors appointments. His last months were marked by a slow steady loss of vision, hearing, balance, and coordination. He lost the ability drive, then walk, and eventually couldn’t care for himself at all, and finally couldn’t even speak.
He spent his last week at Good Shepherd Hospice where he received excellent and dignified care. He departed peacefully, surrounded by his family. He gave me the honor of holding his hand as he took his final breaths. I am confident he is reveling with angels.
Thank you to all who made his last weeks and months more graceful by helping to provide for his spiritual, physical, and emotional needs in so many different ways.
I was able to take the entire month of January off from work and he and I felt so blessed to have been by his side day and night for his last three weeks where big changes in his health status happened almost daily. We have received so much love and support, already, and could sincerely use a bit more to get through his funeral.
Padraic’s last concern in life was to be sure his children were taken care of.
His last words, and the only words he bothered to speak in his final days were simply, “I love you”. In the end, love was all that mattered to him.
